Climate control/ A-C question

Well, this past week I bought my wife an 06 R500 to replace her aging Odyssey.. and noticed with the climate control... after setting it to say 74 or 72.. it will do the MAX COOL thing for a short while.. and then begin turning down. Before too long it is hardly audible and the cabin is nice and cool.

Well, it got me thinking that MAYBE my E is not 100% upto stuff. It is not unusual for me in the hot Texas sun to start the car and have it go on MAX COOL and stay there for LONG PERIODS of time... sometimes my whole trip around town/errands, etc. Often I just manually turn down the fan speed since it is noisy and really doesn't do much to cool.. (keeps me from sweating but not terribly impressive as AC's go).

It's not a "recent" thing.. it's been like this since day 1, and I just assumed it was an E thing... or a MB thing.. and now seeing it in the R500 cooling quicker, more efficiently makes me wonder if my E is normal or maybe some issue.

Does your E do this??

Thanks
Peter

My E was like that, and I have complained about it in the past on these forums. Now, I have a 2006 ML, and the A/C DOMINATES over the E. I used to have a 20 minute commute home after the car had been in the sun all day, and the E would stay Max the entire trip if it was anything above 85. Now I have a 5 minute commute, and the ML does an admirable job keeping the cabin cool, and I even have a black exterior. It does not stay on Max for very long at all.

That's exactly how I handle my 2003 E A/C in the TX sun. I just assume this is the way the car is.

I'm in Austin, nice and hot here too. A/C is pretty much on max cool in the heat over 100 degrees.

I've had three issues with my A/C. One was regarding the baffle in the duct system, several weeks ago it got stuck and fogged up my passenger side windshield every morning. Second, the passenger side would not blow air at the same pressure as the driver's side. Third, the fan is loud as a freight train when A/C is on max. Dealer fixed all except for #3.

I had been complaining about hot air coming out my rear A/C vents with the A/C on & in an effort to correct the situation, the service people "re-set my A/C controls".

Since then my A/C has been colder, and I have had to set the temperature higher so as not to get too cold.

It is now how the car was when I got it in Dec '03, but over the years, I felt that the A.C had gotten warmer when set at that original temperature setting, necessitating that I set the temperature lower to maintain comfort.

Re-setting must be some sort of recalibration for the 4 zone controller. My A/C is rarely on MAX for more than 5 minutes even in 100 degree heat... which I'll admit is not common here except for brief summer "Heat Waves" which last only a week at a time.

While no one can say that these 134a A/C units are anywhere near as cold as the old R12 units were, even with 4 people in the car on a 1/2 hour drive, the car is always comfortably cool without staying in MAX Cool very long.
(It did nothing for the heat in the rear problem, for which there is apparently some sort of DSB for, which I will bring the car in for next week.)
