2000 Mercedes E320 and ML430
E350 Question

Hey everyone! I am new to this forum, but I have been reading posts here for months. I currently own a 2000 E320 with only 17,000 miles on it, and I am seriously considering purchasing the 2003 E320 in the spring or summer. However, I just finished reading posts on the ML board and it is confirmed that Mercedes is coming out with a new 3.7L V6 engine for the ML, which will be called the ML350. This new engine will be coming out this fall. I would not want to purchase a 2003 E320 if there was going to be an E350 coming out in the relatively near future. If anyone has any information on when the E320 will change to the E350 please post it. In previous messages it has been said that the new engine will come out in the E-Class for model year 2005 or 2006. I don't understand why Mercedes would put an all-new engine in the ML but not the new E-Class until 2005/6!!! That makes no sense to me at all.

Thanks for advance for any info!!!

The 3.7 would be in the 2004 ML correct? I thought that it was strange to the put 5.0 in the 2002 ML500 and not upgrade the 2002 E-Class to E500. Plus the 2002 ML500 is a lot cheaper than the 2002 E430. Only a guess - they may do the same thing in 2004.

I have been posting to find out if this so-called 3.7 motor is based on the current 2 plug/3 valve or the new direct-injection engines. Anyone know? Thanks.

My guess is that the would not introduce an E350 or E370 before, at the earliest, the 2004 model year. It would seem very strange to make this huge spash with the new E which took so much planning, etc. and then change the engine a few months later. I also haven't seen anything on this potential change for the E class at any of MB's european web sites which often have a lot of advanced info.

The E is their most important car. In the US at least, the 3.2L V6 is their tried and true bread and butter engine. I suspect they would be a little cautious about modifying that too quickly.

I'd love to hear more from anyone with solid info.

Benz will want to keep it's advantage over the E Class with the S Class by holding off on putting the 350 in it too early.

IMHO I think 2005,around the time of the facelift will be the change over time.

They didn't upgrade the 02 E430 due to the complete redesign of the Eclass in 03. The reason the ML500 is cheaper than the 02 E430 is just for the fact that the ML is built in the U.S. (no import charges involved), not to mention the MLs are most likely cheaper to build overall.
