E-Motion Miami -WOW

Today I went to the Mercedes E-motion in NE Miami. What a spread they had there from food, to back massages in an A/C tent.

They had 2 driving areas for the 320 and 500. I had the chance to drive them both many many times. The brakes are phenomenal. The power on the 500 is a dream, the 320 is smooth and nice too. Very quiet and smooth.
The handeling is great. Sitting in the front seat is very comfortable. However, the rear seat is very tight and small. It reminds me of my old BMW 325i. If you are over 6'0, then it will not be too comfortable for long rides. The front seats adjust to your body perfectly. I now have an 97 528i and the car is much larger and wider.

The interior is beautiful and superior quality. The wood is great and chrome detail on the dials. Even the window openers are great. The trunk is nice and wide. Its just that back seat that has me thinking twice now....

For fun I test drove the Hummer 2 yesterday,,,now that was cool...

Overall it is a beautiful car. They even had the MIBII car there on display!

If you are looking for a quality compact,,this is it!

2003 SL Launch Edition, 2003 E500 Pewter/Stone
I went to the Miami event and agree with StanR that it was terrific. Both Es are wonderful to drive. I am not sure what Stan was concerned about regarding the over 6' driver. I am 6'1" and my head never came close to the E headliners. As to "compact", I do not consider the E a "compact" by any means. Here are the actual comparisons between Stan's 1997 BMW 528i and the Es:

2003 E320/500 1997 BMW 528i
Wheelbase: 112.4" 111.4"
Length: 190.3" 188"
Width: 71.3" 70.9"
HP: 221/302hp 190hp
Weight: 3635/3815 lbs 3525 lbs

It seems that the E is larger in all dimensions. I think of the E as a "standard" size car in the "compact" type terms. Its wheelbase exceeds many "full size" cars.

Anyway, I agree with all of the other observations of Stan as to quality and performance. Just not his comment on size.

Thanks for the details. Well for some reason, the rear of the car appears tight. I heard many people have gotten their deposits back as a result. The 2002 model appears wider, taller,,,,Its just a fact,,, But the car is GREAT...

Also I spoke to people who work for MB USA and they themselves are confused about both the navigation and CD delay.

True, the CLK 320 (2003) looked a lot less impressive. Even the interior is the same as last years. Am sure the convertible will be trhe way to go when it comes out next year....

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupe ;)
EEEEEEEEE 500 all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!
***************************************

I spent 4 hours at the GULFSTREAM race track E-Motion event.
The E 500 has many design features that surpass the S, SL and CL!

Interior:

The Best of all MBs! Beautifully designed and very functional. Even under the front seats storage compartments!

Unfortunately, the DVD based Comand system won't be ready till the Fall or Spring '03.

Sound:

The Best! The HK upgrade is the finest I've heard - bar none - including the ML Lexus.

Ride, Handling and Ergonomics:

I am 6' 2" and the seats were custom made for my frame. The car's handling was superb - racing at 50 mph through a tight serpentine cone-lined course was done effortlessly! No cones were touched. Brakes were superb. Acceleration??

Well, I am biased because of my CLK55 AMG. Even with the ESP off, I was NOT able to spinn the rear wheels on the E 500.

500 or 320? It only costs $1,600 to go first class!

As someone pointed out recently on the forum, if you add options to the 320, the difference is $3,600. If you add the cost of trading up to 17" wheels, the difference will be further reduced by $2,000, --

Difference: A de minimus $1,600.

Summary:

The new E is a step UP, destined to be a winner from the get-go.

EVERYBODY loved it!

Unfortunately, the new CLK on the display got less than an enthusiastic response/reception and received at best mixed reviews from an audience, excited about the premiere of the new E.
