LED Taillights?

The description of the sport package says it includes LED tail lights (included in sport package on both the E500 and 320). How much of a difference is there between the two types of taillights? I read somewhere that the only difference is in how fast the lights activate when you step on the brake. Is that all? Does it increase interior trunk volume at all (supposedly LED lights are much thinner and don't require a big bulb housing)?

the leds light up the whole part of the brake light portion. they are quite nice actually.
but i don't think there is any extra trunk space gained from this.

If you look at the brochure there is a small picture on the sports package page showing the LEDs. It sort of looks like a Lite Brite for those who remember what that is. Instead of a single bulb lighting up the red plastic shell ,there are several small LED lights that together fill up the illuminated red part.

The speed at which the bulbs come should be the same. the signal from the brake pedal to the lights travels at the speed of the electricity in either case and that is VERY fast.

I think the LEDs are really cool, i just saw the back of an E240 sport at night and the LED's look state of the art. I think LED's dont burn out, so you can be sure that you wont get a ticket for a busted brake light.

I'm sure they do look nice - probably a more intense red light. Getting a ticket for a burnt out brake light should no longer be an issue with automatic lamp substitution.

LED lamps are cool because they "pop" on the way true Xenon headlamps "pop" on (as opposed to halogens.) Watch the brake lights on the S-class, as well as the turn signals on some of the late-model cadillacs. I personally think the "popping" look of LEDs are really nice and distinctive.

upgrade

So LED's are only available with the sport package?

If so I bet someone will find a way to install them in their non-sport package E. I know I would!

There shouldn't be a problem putting the LED tailights on a non-sport E class. But there might be a voltage issue though. As far as I know LEDs require much lower voltages than regular bulbs. That might be a problem if someone tries to swap them out.
