Different classes of W211 ?

Hi everyone. Can anyone illuminate me as to what appears to be different versions or classes of W211?

On some installation instructions I've seen from MB, it will say things like:

MODEL 211.004 /006 /016 /023 /026 /028 /042 /043 /056 /061 /065 /070

I don't think that these are option codes; are they perhaps country codes?

Yeah, how to get one with absolutely no out of pocket cost! Seriously though, there are many here that know much more than I’ll ever know.

So the 004, 006, 016, 023, 028, 042, 043 and 061 must be smaller-engine models not sold in North America ...

What there are are three trim levels

Classic
Elegance
Avantgarde

Within these there are many engine choices

and then AMG, i.e. E63

There is no official reference to a class within a class.

USA has traditionally gotten what is mostly Elegance trim and of course a more limited selection of engines.

Easiest place to learn about all this is http://www.mercedes.co.uk

MB-UK currently offers (or "offer", as they would say there) the E350 in three trim levels - Elegance (base), Avantgard and Sport. The Avantgard seems to be somewhere between the base and Sport USA versions, though I'm not about to do an item-by-item comparison. Interestingly, the UK Sport version is debadged.

Well while you are at this, the back number for the new 550 engines is 072 and not 070. It is 211.072

You are correct!
1 step up model after the E240 is the E280 (3.0L gasoline engine)
