2003 E500 Engine Noise
I bought a certified 2003 E500 from a local MB Dealer in Sept 2005 with 1 1/2 original warranty.....vehicle had 21,000 plus bought extended two additional year MB warranty. Wondering if others having this Year/Model have noticed their engines being a little clanky when first started up in the morning until the engine warms up. Then the noise subsides other than the normal fuel ejectors. When first starting for the day, I usually let it run a few minutes to warm up before taking off down the road. Engine runs very well and have had no problems. When I've taken the car into the MB Dealer for normal service and asked them to check it out, the report from the garage indicates no anomolies/problems. Just wondering others have the same experience clanky noise and if I should get a second opinion from another MB dealer or 3rd party maintenance shop? If there's something wrong want it covered by the warranty, of course.

Consider the engine noise on start up normal. It take a few seconds for the oil to start circulating. It is the valves in you engine slapping, if the noise lasts longer then a few seconds on start-up, especially if it is always noisy, then see your dealer, you need rockers.

Our '03 E500 sounds the same after warmup as it does when first started in the morning. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the difference in engine noise on your car indicates something wrong, though.
You didn't ask, but you don't need to warm up your E500 before driving off, at least not in D.C. Just drive away and take it easy for the first few minutes and it'll be fine.
