Rear air question

I have the E550 with of course the 4 zone climate control. My question has to do with the rear air registers for the back seat people. When using the the thumbwheel control in the rear seats for the air volume control it only seems to be able to limit the amount of air that is dispersed. It is not able to increase the airflow if it is opened to the max. I find this strange because my 2002 c class also has air volume controls but when it is opened to near the max it causes another fan to kick up the flow quite a bit, then it can blow much harder in the back then in the front. Now in the E550 the back can only blow some amount less than the front but never more. There is no fan coming on to increase airflow in the back of my new car. Is this the case in other E550 out there. The manual is of no help on this issue.

Thanks for your help

Since the 4 zone system can control the temperature in each quarter of the interior separately, I believe the fan speed (when the front is set to auto) is regulated by the car. Are you sure that the back can only blow some amount less than the front but never more? Do you have your front control set on "Auto"? I have all four zones set to 72 degrees and have not had any complaints from the back seat.

Rear a/c is not a separate a/c system there are just ducts running from front to rear. The rear controls probably can blend heat into the output of the front a/c's thruput to the rear vents depending on the temp setting. (As some of us know only too well during the summer) A separate fan in the rear would be a nice feature & was probably removed from more recent designs to save money.

Just a guess...

thanks for the reply. On our euro trip the couple in the back were not cool enough even with the temp set at low. This was due to a lack of air flow. After the front cooled down in auto the fan speed would reduce up front and the back folks were not cool enough yet. Up front would be set up at 73 or something and the back at the lowest possible but the lack of flow never allowed the back to cool enough. My 5 year old c class has rear air registers and if you crank up the flow knob it can really blow irrespective of what is happening up front. But the e registers only limit the amount of air and never increase it above the front flow. Pretty lousy since the c class doesn't advertise being a four zone climate control.

I guess the solution would be to set the fan to a high manual setting when passengers need more air in the back seat. That is what I did with my '05, which had 2 zone climate control. The rear side-window blinds help control the heat in the back seat. They are worth every penny of the $340 that they cost. I used to leave all three rear shades up all summer long in my CDI.

That's what I do when the front is satisfied and the rear seat passengers are still feeling warm. Also remember that as the air travels thru the ducts in the doors it warms up, so its not as cool as the air coming from the front registers, especially at lower fan speeds.

Thanks for the replies we ended up doing exactly what you said about cranking up the front fan so the back got enough flow. Then the front folks have more air then we want or need to help the back. But it is kind of a joke about having 4 zone control when it does not control rear flow. Now anyway I wont complain to the dealer about it. At least the temperature setting in back has a placebo effect. I appreciate the help guys.

I wouldn't worry about the backseaters..Highly unlikely that they contributed anything to the vehicle.....lol Just a joke ..
