CDI Power Loss
My wife complained that she had no power going up a hill.( 05 CDI, 38,000miles). I did the husband thing and asked her if she had pressed the pedal all the way to the floor. She kind of glared at me, ( she went to Skip Barber school with me!) and said she had. When I drove it yesterday, coming off a run of about 30 minutes at 75, it had no power. Pedal to floor, no passing gear, RPM's going down. After shutdown at the parking lot, it was normal again.
I am pretty sure it is the EGR valve. I will call the dealer after the holidays. Will post.

It sounds like Limp Home Mode if loss of power. There are other posts where folks describe their symptoms, but I think that's it.
You'll know if you turn off the ignition and re-start and it's OK.
I belive it was the EGR when I had this happen.

I had this problem intermitently from the day I picked up my car form the dealer. It was hard to diagnose as it only occured when the external temp was a degree or so above or below freezing. It eventually happened at a time where I could get it to the dealer in the error state. it turned out to be the ECU which controlled the angle of the vanes on the turbo.

Did you mean the turbo "vanes"?

I dunno if this is what you are talking about, but my car just stopped working recently. I pushed the gas and nothing. I pulled over turned the car off and turned it back on then it worked. Turned out to be the electronic module in the gas pedal. Coast 300 bucks total to fix.

Gray Market 04 E320 CDI import, Euro COMAND, & Hitch
For what it's worth, I had an 04 CDI with 2000km just turn off while driving in in a small village in Germany. Car would crank and try to start, but ultimately would not run. 3 days later the ECU was replaced,. I was told MB had some pretty serious QC problems with the ECUs before 04, but I dont know if this problem was contained to Europe or to CDIs in particular. I can tell you the problem has never recurred.

05 E320 CDI
On the plus side, I got execellent fuel economy (40+ MPG on the highway) for the 1000 miles that I drove this way. The car in this condition was effectively a non-turbocharged CDI with restrictor plate installed.
