checked out an e-class @ dealer
didn't take it for a spin, but it was an e320, so didn't really want to.
the interior was realyl nice too... black with burled wood. had the pano roof. felt really classy inside. very very nice. for some strange reason, the cabin felt "tall" though... like it was taller than wider...
test drove a bmw 745i right b4... now that's an interior! can't wait to the the new A8s interior... supposed to be real good.

do audis really fare that poorly in terms of reliability? my friend own's an S4 avant and it doesn't seem like he's had a lotta issues with it, even with the twin-turbo setup...

The 745's interior was a huge blunder IMO, and many of the car writers' editorials I've read have said the same.
Audi's new A8 interior is reminiscent of the 745, and is viewable at germancarfans.com.
The new Z4 also has a very "industrial" look to it, even more than the 745.
crazy thing is... i think it handles BETTER than my two-door e46 3 series coupe!
this forum was a great resource and help during my decision making process. almost made me get an E500!!!
thanks, and c u around,

Congrats MMAfia. It's a nice looking car inside and out except for the rear end of course.
It also cost a lot more than the E500 too! Good luck and enjoy.
It does look the best in black........on the cost, if you lease (probably buy as well), the E500 isn't cheaper. The 7series has a ridiculous lease program going on (heavy incentives, very low interest rates).

couldn't pass it up.. bad thing is they're raising the prices for 2k3 models...
but i tell you, every time i see a W211 pass by (not that often yet), i can't help but think... hmmm.... that IS a phat ride!

I just checked Edmunds and the TMV for this car is almost $74K with options similar to what i got on my E500 (probably plus some I don't too). Edmunds shows no incentives either for buying or leasing. Their site may not be up-to-date thought. Even if there are incentives it would take quite a bit to go from $74K to around $60K for my E. I like the 7 series but it was just too much cash IMHO.
Aesthetics???
Sheeesh, I'm losing faith in people here.
Everyone has different taste to be sure, but ask 100 people what they think of the A8 and 745 aesthetically.
Then ask them about an SL500, or an E500, or a CL500.
Why do you think BMW is offering those heavy incentives on their brand new flagship car?
Because no one is buying them. Our BMW dealer said almost half of his customers with deposits on the 7 prior to its launch ended up walking away once they got a look at it!
When is the last time you heard of that happening?
Lots of griping and whining on the BMW boards too. They're very worried that Chris Bangle (they've remaned him 'Bungle') is going to tarnish the image of the brand with this precedent.
And the A8, no matter how unusual and advanced its aluminum frame and 4WD and such, is almost universally thought of as a second class citizen, no panache, no charisma, no following.
Hence its abysmal resale value.
The new A8 is a mini-step forward vs the outgoing model. At least BMW had the cajones to try to make a statement with their new flagship, and MB significantly enhanced the new 211 from both tech and interior perspectives. Audi is an extremely passive group. And with that kind of attitude, they'll never draw even with MB or BMW.
BUT- i have a late 2k2 build date, and no problems yet. But yes, if i do run into a lot, then I may go the same route, except the RS6 takes precedence over the E55 in my book- something about those flared fenders that i keep coming back to...
btw, in my opinion, the e65/66 has a much better interior than the W220, nevermind the W211. but that's just my opinion, and one of the main reasons why i got my e66
