checked out an e-class @ dealer

loved the way the front looked... next to the R230 SL, my fav benz from the front.

didn't take it for a spin, but it was an e320, so didn't really want to.

the interior was realyl nice too... black with burled wood. had the pano roof. felt really classy inside. very very nice. for some strange reason, the cabin felt "tall" though... like it was taller than wider...

test drove a bmw 745i right b4... now that's an interior! can't wait to the the new A8s interior... supposed to be real good.

Interior opinion

I owned a 745i and thought the interior was too "industrial" with that straight across dash ala 2002 E430. I prefer the "****pit" approach in the new E which is very similar to the current BMW 5 series and previous BMW 740. If you buy the Audi I suggest you purchase a Hyundai Tiberon to tow like a dingy when you have maintenance problems.

i currently have an e46 coupe and want a change of pace from the ****pit feel of the two-door interior...

do audis really fare that poorly in terms of reliability? my friend own's an S4 avant and it doesn't seem like he's had a lotta issues with it, even with the twin-turbo setup...

Everyone's different, I suppose.
The 745's interior was a huge blunder IMO, and many of the car writers' editorials I've read have said the same.
Audi's new A8 interior is reminiscent of the 745, and is viewable at germancarfans.com.
The new Z4 also has a very "industrial" look to it, even more than the 745.

Congrats MMAfia. It's a nice looking car inside and out except for the rear end of course. It also cost a lot more than the E500 too! Good luck and enjoy.

It does look the best in black........on the cost, if you lease (probably buy as well), the E500 isn't cheaper. The 7series has a ridiculous lease program going on (heavy incentives, very low interest rates).

i think the new 7 is the best looking car out right now....the exterior beats any car, and so does the interior...there are to many gadgets for this time...its not expensive at all either, and its very fast also, under 6..

I just checked Edmunds and the TMV for this car is almost $74K with options similar to what i got on my E500 (probably plus some I don't too). Edmunds shows no incentives either for buying or leasing. Their site may not be up-to-date thought. Even if there are incentives it would take quite a bit to go from $74K to around $60K for my E. I like the 7 series but it was just too much cash IMHO.

Indeed, they aren't always up to date.....BMW dealers are discounting them heavily (dealer incentives) and BMW Financial has very low rates on the 745. A $75k 7series should come close to where a $63-$65k E500 comes in (which basically has no discounts and no special rates).

I really like the new Audi A8, not to keen on the new BMW 7 series though. I wonder what the Audi A8 will cost in Australia. At the moment we only have the one A8 4.2 at over $150K but the new 3.x ltr may be much cheaper.

Audi A8's and BMW 745's???
Aesthetics???

Sheeesh, I'm losing faith in people here.
Everyone has different taste to be sure, but ask 100 people what they think of the A8 and 745 aesthetically.
Then ask them about an SL500, or an E500, or a CL500.

Why do you think BMW is offering those heavy incentives on their brand new flagship car?

Because no one is buying them. Our BMW dealer said almost half of his customers with deposits on the 7 prior to its launch ended up walking away once they got a look at it!
When is the last time you heard of that happening?

Lots of griping and whining on the BMW boards too. They're very worried that Chris Bangle (they've remaned him 'Bungle') is going to tarnish the image of the brand with this precedent.

And the A8, no matter how unusual and advanced its aluminum frame and 4WD and such, is almost universally thought of as a second class citizen, no panache, no charisma, no following.
Hence its abysmal resale value.

The new A8 is a mini-step forward vs the outgoing model. At least BMW had the cajones to try to make a statement with their new flagship, and MB significantly enhanced the new 211 from both tech and interior perspectives. Audi is an extremely passive group. And with that kind of attitude, they'll never draw even with MB or BMW.

Good luck MMafia - you're going to need it!

I ditched my 745 after 6 mos and 7k miles because of reliability issues. It's not just an issue of component design, but BMW doesn't have the necessary maintenance training and support in place at the dealerships. For a larger car it handles well with good accelartion and relatively quiet with the 18 inch tires. When I dumped my 745i I test drove the various alternatives and was disappointed. I didn't have an opportunity to test drive an E500 but I did sit in a "sold" one and tested the seats and audio, etc. IMO the interior is better than the 745 with the exception of the head rests. Since MB changed the steering and suspension (my 2 main objections to MB previously) I decided to order an E500. I'll be taking delivery in about 3 weeks. After my BMW experience my main concern is reliability. If the E500 proves itself I'll probably step up to an E55 otherwise I'm going Japanese boring or not!

yes yes... i've read and heard (especially on the org) of all the complaints...

BUT- i have a late 2k2 build date, and no problems yet. But yes, if i do run into a lot, then I may go the same route, except the RS6 takes precedence over the E55 in my book- something about those flared fenders that i keep coming back to...

btw, in my opinion, the e65/66 has a much better interior than the W220, nevermind the W211. but that's just my opinion, and one of the main reasons why i got my e66
