I just switched out my old US COMAND with a Euro COMAND with DVD play back. The DVD player, however, stopped displaying on the screen when the car was in motion. But this is not my problem...yet. While I was trying to unlock the DVD player, I stumbled onto this system menu. I pressed mute, 3,5,7 on my COMAND because the mute, end call, serv button combination didn't work. On this system menu, it had a list of different COMAND models (i.e. W211_US). My COMAND was originally set to W211_ECE and I foolishly changed to W211_US. The 'Video' button reverted back to the 'SAT' function in the US COMAND and lost all DVD function. I tried resetting the system to W211_ECE, but does not want to reset. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I will probably need help unlocking my DVD player after I get this taken care of.

Press and hold 5, followed by 3,7 (hold them also) until you get that MODEL screen. Once there choose w211ECE, then press the [KEYBOARD] softkey and make sure the keyboard is also set to w211ECE or VARIANT SPECIFIC.

For the change to take effect, you must walk away from the car and allow it to "sleep" for a few minutes (5 usually works), then come back to the car and everything should be fine.

The Engineering MENU is accessed by pressing [MUTE], [END] & [SERV] simultaneously - hold for about 8 seconds. When the MENU screen finally appears press[*],[#],[Left Arrow] and hold it for a few seconds -- the first italicised option on the right will allow you to set the DVD in Motion feature.

[MUTE], [END], [SERV] will work, just keep trying until you get the timing right.

Thanks for the quick reply. In the MODEL menu, after I select W211_ECE then press [KEYBOARD] and select W211_ECE on the next screen, do I press the [BACK] softkey and exit out of the menu?

Also to let my car 'sleep' for five minutes, should I change the settings then leave the car running for 5 minutes or do I turn the engine off. Please let me know.

Change the settings, then just shut off the COMAND.

Turn the ignition off, lock your car and walk away with the key. Go grab a beer or something.. stay away from the car for about 5 minutes (keep your distance too, 10+ feet).

By the time you get back, everything should keep the new settings. If it doesn't work, then stay away a bit longer than 5 minutes.

Everything is back to normal. Thanks for your help GL. I am still trying to access the Engineering Menu. Is there a trick to getting this menu or is it more of a luck thing?

As for the Engineering Menu, I've never known it not to work. No trick, just press all the buttons simultaneously.

Haha...my mistake. For the Engineering Menu, still no luck. Is there a certain screen or menu I am supposed to be on when I press the 3 buttons?

Everytime I press the three buttons a small box the letter 'TA' shows up on the bottom of the screen. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

05+UP euro comands have a different code to access the menu, which no one in the public knows.
if you have an older euro comand you may have gotten the software on it updated, causing it to disable to menu access as the newer built ones have it.
You can't downgrade software at the dealership, apparently it will make your comand unusable. you'd have to send it somewhere to get the unit "VERSION CODED" by a STAR computer...MBdoctor, sunman, and MBNL all offer the service...costs around 200-300. and if you're software gets updated again(shouldn't unless you ask for it to be at the dealer) you're outta luck.


I get the same TA icon when I try to access the eng. menu. I think it enables traffic assistance/reports or Tele-aid..not sure which, but i do know with it on every once in awhile the music playing will cut out and go to a quick incomprehensible audio bit...so i keep that TA thing off, you gotta turn it off in the audio-radio menu I believe...or somewhere in the audio menu.

I'm questioning whether or not i want to pay hundreds of bucks for the dvd-in-motion feature...I'm not gonna use it myself as it's ridiculously dangerous and distracting...but I know my friends would enjoy it very much - though i wonder how much they'd enjoy it if they had to pay for it being enabled..

I guess you're right...it can be distracting. My only other concern is that my DVD player can not play US DVD's. Hopefully someone figures out the Engineering menu access code to the newer Euro COMANDs within the next year.

I just put a 2006 EURO command and NAV DVD in my E320 and it had a Europe DVD in it. The problem is that the US DVD I got wont load and I believe it's due to the Country code and I can't get to the engineering menu to change it. It also won’t allow playing US DVD's because of the country code. Any ideas?

I can access the NAV hidden menus by going to the NAV screen and pressing the (NAV + 5) buttons but it’s basically useless. The only other screen I can access is the “MODEL” and “KEYBOARD” screens thanks to the post from Steve “MbenzNL” but I haven’t changed anything other then Keyboard to “VARIANT SPECIFIC”.

I just found this on another forum. I am not sure if this works:
A couple of information about this mode:
It can be activate on 203's Comand by presssing at the same time and holding down for some seconds Mute +Phone Down+Serv.
On W211 the sequence is Mute + Eject + midle right softbutton
on some other units different combination may work. Try:
- MUTE + 3 + 4 +5
- Phone Down + 1 + 3 + 6
- 1+6+4+3
- mute + phone down + serv
- mute + 3 +4 +6
- mute+357
There are a lot of things you can do.
1 for all:
Go to Diagnose
Scroll down to find "Set Variant"
select the last one: (it is a Smart)
At this time swich off and extract the key. You have to wait until the MOST goes down(the instrument cluster goes off)
Insert the key and keep looking at comand screen.

If you select 251 version, you are able to find a new navigation mode named OFFROAD, very nice, with steering angle altimeter and compass, plus position.

Keep in mind that when you let most go off again, the information will return the original ones, and you losto the mod.

I am sure that is possible to lock the change and enable mp3 and dvd from this menù. look at this:

Dr.Dist(Driver Distraction) this function is able to avoid TV off at ten Kmh
BackDoor: Not sure of the function
RegCode: this is the item that can manage the reginal setting. You can fix the modification of your Comand version from Here.

I have found that in some version of comand holding for more than 10 seconds the following key combination while in engineering mode, you can access these functions:
* +# + Arrow on the left (in the right navigation pad)
1 +3 +Arrow on the left
1 +3 +9

I found that post too and tried all combinations but I still wasn’t able to get to the engineering menu. Not sure if I’m not doing it correctly or if it doesn’t work on newer models after mid 2006. I now many people have reported that any updated versions won’t work but it may because new key combinations haven’t been posted yet.

Anyway, thanks for the update.

By the way, it seems that many people have had difficulty trying to access the “MODEL” and “KEYBOARD” menu. I have found, on the mid 2006 7039 EURO model I have, going to the “AUX” input screen and holding down the 5+3 keys together first then pressing and holding the 7 key will bring up the hidden “MODEL” and “KEYBOARD” menu. Again, it only allows you to set the model and keyboard types and is not the Engineering MENU.

i trieyd 5+3+7 there are w211 usa 240 usa r171 usa but no w211 ece what can i do i am from germany i dont need satellieten Radio i will only dvd.

Hi Bayx, I am not quite sure what to do if there is no w211 ece option. Try the other options and see if they give you the dvd option.

I switched out my US COMAND with a Euro COMAND unit so I could specifically watch dvds in my car. US COMAND units can not play dvds. They have a 'SAT' button rather than the European version, which has a 'VIDEO' button, on the unit.

I remember reading the differences between a US COMAND and a Euro COMAND online. The difference is that the Euro COMAND has a dvd drive. The US version only has a cd drive. I could be wrong though.

I have the same problem! Switched accidentally from ECE to US version. Now I don't have a W211ECE option or any other ECE option anymore!!

Kinda stuck now....i tried flashing the unit with a Euro update disc but it won't accept the Euro update disc.

What can we do?? Did anyone figure this one out yet??

Also note that I have one of the rare US Comand-APS that had the DVD Drive in the HU. I can playback DVD-MP3 discs however not DVD-Video discs.

That's why I need to revert it back to W211ECE.

Hi guys. in my car is set to US COMAND. after installing new software, it can play MP3 files, it can also play DVD-MP3(!).

No, it can't.
US Comands don't have DVD Video decoder installed.

By the way mine is also plays MP3 files, but not from DVD disk.
How did you do that?
