Noise at engine idle--07 E550
Hi--First time post. New 07 E550 with about 800 mi (so far) has had a "knocking" noise at idle and just above since new. Hasn't changed during break-in. Don't know if this is a normal noise as a result of something in the emissions control system, or if it's something more serious. Attenuates after engine warms, but is still slightly audible. Not camshaft, not rod or main bearing--almost sounds like something in the exhaust system is setting up an harmonic resonance or is knocking up against something with improper clearance. Any feedback would be appreciated before I take the car in to have it listened to.

my 550 also makes this noise at cold start up and gradually quiets as the engine warms up the noise seems to be coming from lower area of the engine what does the vaper cannister do anyway ? should it be fixed?

the vapor canister is emissions related. Unless it is throwing a CEL for something related, then I wouldn't worry about that.
I cannot think of anything in the front right of the car that would make that type of knocking noise that would be engine related.
I remember a short while back there was a DTB for one of the purge lines running ontop of the fuel tank or somewhere near it that would cause a thumping noise. I'll check tomorrow when I get to work for anything related to this..

I think we're talking about the same engine noise--I'll see what I can find out and report back. The vapor cannister is an emission control element--most people don't seem to worry about the thumping noise (which I've been told results as a valve shifts from open to closed), but I guess it's fixable if overly annoying.
