I have gotten 2 months myself. i am sure you can do better.
You can also transfer your lease to someone else.

Sometimes there is a "special" and this is done. If there is no factory deal at this time, go to the dealer, tell him what you want to do and be certain you specify that you do not want to pay the remaining payments or the penalty and ask him to try to arrange this thru his MB relationship person. This could only be done if your lease is with MBCC. In late 04 I was offerd an early out on my 01 lease to take an 05. I did not do it but did it at the end of my lease in early 05.They will try to work with you in order to deliver a new car.

How many months would be unreasonable?

Can't tell you that but when I was offered it was 4 or 5 mos early. I think that beyond the 6 mos early you would be out of luck. By the way with all the MB's I have leased I have never received the early out offer in the form of a letter that you mentioned.
