"Whirring" Sound

Hard to describe the sound. Not a grinding sound. More of a "whir". It happens only when the car is cold AND I make a 3/4-to-full lock turn (e.g. I'm backing out of the driveway in the morning, turning onto the street). The sound comes while I'm turning the wheel. Once my car is straight again, the sound's gone.

Also, once the car's warmed up, and I make those 3/4 turns, there's no sound.

Any thoughts?

Is it a DIY job? Where's it located?

Should I be worried (leak, other issues) that the fluid level is low?

Under the hood. Yeah, its a simple DIY job, but let them top it off, they won't overfill it & they'll use the right stuff. Tell them you want to wait for it. I told them its a closed system (supposedly) and where'd it go? They said not to worry. So I don't.

Had a similar problem a while ago (a little over a year). It progressively got worse. Took her in for service and they ended up replacing something associated with the steering. Recently I started noticing it again (much more subtle though) when backing in to parking spaces and wheel at full lock.

45k miles, I'll have them look her over before the warranty expires.

Interesting. sounds like the same symptoms. I emailed my service advisor to see what his diagnosis is as well. How was your power steering fluid-level when you took your car in the first time? Was it low?

Don't know.. didn't ask. All I was interested in was the problem disappearing, and it did.

I'll review my service logs this evening and provide more details about what was fixed/replaced.

Mention P-B-46.30/22a APR05 – Noises from the power steering pump. Fluid level, noise in adjacent components, clearance between lines and components, any possible leakage, and power steering gear will be inspected. Also reservoir and filter will be replaced if needed.

Many complaints about noise coming from the steering system, particularly during the colder seasons, are caused by the fluid level in the power steering pump reservoir being too low, without the system having a leak. Small shortages are sufficient to cause the pump to take in air or foaming fluid, which then produces noises. It is recommended to always fill the fluid level to “Maximum” fort the corresponding temperature, particularly during winter.

Power steering fluid – Pentosin CHF 11S (part # BQ 1320001)
