Is the speed off?

Well I got my GPS unit a few days ago and was testing out the cars to see which car was off the most in indicated speed vs real speed. My little BMW was off between 3-5 MPH which I kind of figured. What shocked me is how accurate the E class is even at higher speeds, at most it was off by .5 mph but mostly ranged from .2-.3 off. I tested this on both of our E classes with similar results on both.

My unit uses the SiRFstarIII chipset, 20 channel. At the time the speeds were recorded I had 10 satellites locked and clear view of sky.

Speed accuracy

I also have 2 sattelite GPS sytems which are both portable.
My findings are that both the portable sytems READ 2 to 3 M.P.H.
LESS than the actual speedometer in my E class across the all the range (10 to 120 M.P.H).
e.g. Speed reading on cars own speedometer 30 M.P.H .....GPS reads (27/28).
You will find most moden cars speedomerters are set MINUS - a little because in my opinion it gives more tolerance to law inforcements on speed cameras, radar, etc.

In Europe at least the speedo is not allowed to show lower than actual speed. The car manufacturer even needs to take into account the tolerance range of tyres that are accepted for the car. The tyre diameter (roll-circle) may vary quite a lot for the same nominal size for different tyre brands.

If you get close to 0.5 mph errors, you probably have tyres close to the max allowed tolerance in their size, or perhaps you actually have a higher than rated tyre diameter.
