new mirrors upgrade?

I just "read" from a Japanese MB magazine, of swapping/updating the side mirrors. Now I couldn't read the article but could figure out from the pics that they seemed to easily mod the older W211 (03-05) with the newer side mirrors which stand-off from the body by a couple inches. Any opinions whether this is a plausible option?

Yes it is possible. I just did it on my car. Only modification you need to make is to drill three small holes for the bolts to go though that hold on the mirror. These holes are covered by the mirror and the interior trim, so no worries if the holes aren't perfect.

Thanks Joeacc. Whoa, very cool! The newer style is definitely looks better but functionally does it provide a better rear view with no blind spots? Would you be able to describe how the newer version works?

As long as you have the US mirrors and don't adjust them per the newest guidelines/suggestions you will still have a blindspot. Replacing the mirrorglass with the EURO mirrorglass will be much better if you are looking at minimizing the blindspots.

Mirror Question

On the E350 does the right hand mirror turn down when you back up?

It was standard 03 through 06 however, for 07 the feature was removed. Upon taking delivery mention to the person who is presenting the features tutorial to instruct you on using the Parking Assist feature. The Instrument Cluster Multi Function Display will not include the option to turn on. Request that the Service Department Shop Foreman activate it through Star Diagnosis. If Parking Assist instructions are printed in your manual this will help to support your claim.

The early build '07s still had the feature. Mine does.

Standard 03 through early 07, thanks. However, answer was relative to jimm's situation.

I think the “mirror turn down” during back-up is important.

So that I’m totally clear on your answers, do I understand that:

1) This feature was available up to the early 07’s .. but NOT for
later 07’s?

2) Even if it didn’t come with this feature “activated,” the shop
can “activate” it? Can’t imagine why they would drop a feature
like this.

Thanks.

My car was built Jan 07. It doesn't have it. My 2004 did. I always had it turned on in my '04, because it was there & I wanted everything turned on. I don't miss it. Sometimes when I was backing out of a parking stall, I would need the mirror to see behind me, not look down at the white lines. Are you that worried you will rub the curb when you parallel park?

No. Just that there is sometimes something up close on the right that you can’t easily see and would rather not back over or into.

Rubbing the curb is my worse nightmare. As camera's become common for backing up, I'd love to have another mounted under the passenger mirror to give a view of the ground.

Ok, so I drove my car for the first time yesterday, and yes the mirrors are definately not the best for wide vision. Some of the hardest outside mirrors I have used for visibility, but they sure do look nice.

Oh, well, as long as they look good who cares about the visibility disadvantages of the mirrors. Who said safety is No. 1, how dare they, the mirrors look GOOD.
