Lowering an E350

Probably I'm alone but I hate the “nose-dive” look on ANY car.
And, it seems that the more streamlined car makers try to
make cars (to get better mileage) the more the nose-dive look
is accentuated. (Unlike the great Bentley or RR front ends.)

Therefore, I “may” be interested in lowering the “back only” of
my 08 350. Just an inch or two.

1. Has anyone done this “rear only” lowering?
2. How is it done?
3. What does it cost?
4. Did your MB dealer do it? (I’d prefer that.)
5. How did the ride and handling change?
6. Did it require realignment?
7. What about resetting headlights?

As soon as I get my 08, I'm going to put black mud flaps on the
back only (as I did my C6) to lower the appearance just a little.

As I understand it, with the air suspension models, you can
lower the rear with a switch. I would have gotten this if it had
been available on the 350.

On the E320 (Im assuming the E350 as well) there are 3x3.5mm shims and a rubber pad. You can remove any combination of these in order to alter the ride height

To do this goes something as follows:
1. remove wheel
2. remove one of the rear suspension links (its the one with the allen head) in order to gain access to the "star" main bolt where the suspension attaches to the subframe.
3. Remove the big "star" bolt where the suspension attaches to the subframe
4. The suspension should now fall down and the spring can be pulled out and the shims removed.
5. Put back together in opposite sequence - use a jack to raise the suspension back into place. Its sometimes difficult to get everything aligned. A combination of a mallet, sledge, and air tools help here.

Lowering the rear suspension causes the rear toe to increase. Depending on how much you lower it (probably not very much) an alignment may or may not be required.

As far as headlights, I know the halogens are aimed relatively low from the factory so i wouldnt worry about it. But they can be adjusted with a flat head screw driver. Someone correct me here but I think the xenons should self level and correct themselves??
