Steering returning back to center...

Being that I'm new to this forum and my '05 E320 CDI, I'm wondering about the normal steering response. Specifically after making a right or left hand turn on a normal street (~20mph), the steering wheel doesn't seem to return back to center quickly/easily. It seems that I need to help it back to center.

I read from another forum that there may be a speed sensitive solenoid fault. Is that plausible?

No. Thats the way these cars are. After you turn, you have to "unturn", you don't just straighten your 4 fingers & let the wheel slide back to center thru your thumb & palm.

I was surprized by this "thick" steering feel way back when I got my '04. My guess is that they don't want "twitchy" steering at high speeds... However, my '07 seems to "re-center somewhat more automatically" (American Car Style) after coming out of a turn, but I believe they changed the steering for '07. The steering is definitely NOT as "thick" as my other car was... but still not "Self Centering" American Car Style.

You will get used to it. Its no big deal, and there's nothing wrong with your car. If you want reassurance, let the dealers mechanic take it around a few corners with you. Also, recheck your tire pressures. Low tire pressure can "thicken up" the steering too.

BTW, Welcome! This is a very informative place. Much better than other forums because there are more good, informed answers/solutions here.

Thanks Barry45RPM!

Ok, I can live with this "thick" steering feel. Its not that inhibiting but just something to get use to. Interesting how you mentioned of the standard american style, that being what most other car manufacturer are doing.
