Lurker Question

I'm a lurker here, but I'm a moderator at a very similar board with civil members (none of that edmonds.com flamewar crap), but focused on a different vehicle.
Anyhow, I'm pretty interested in MB, and I *really* like this new E-Class...otherwise its save my pennies for the S.
My question to the group. I noticed in another thread (this forum...I think the youngster in San Diego with 1500 posts, LOL) that someone stated the classes go through redesigns every six years. Is this written in stone? Are we pretty sure to expect a new E in 2009?
Follow up question. Does this 6 year lifespan apply to the S class as well?
Final question, when was the last S class re-design, and when will the next one be expected?
I ask all these nosey, probing questions because if I decide to wait 7 years (if I can,
), then I'd like a first or second year of a redesign S class.Thanks for your patience with my long post/MB newbie question.

well, it isnt always going to be 6 years....they just had a lot of success with the old E. try going to www.mbspy.com and on that site, there is a timeline sort of thing, which is kind of cool.....it will show past models, and upcoming models....including all models..thats the best place to go as of right now
The last E (W210) ran from 1997 - 2002. They did a minor update in either 1999 or 2002.
The New E W211 follows the design of the S Class, which was completely redesigned in 2000. They did a minor update this year.
As far I remember the E (W124?) model (the one before the W210) ran from about 85 - 96.
The previous SL Ran from 90 - 2002, 12 years with only minor changes!
These are all based on US model dates.
I think 6 - 7 years is about right and if the S continues to set the pace for the others, there should be an indicatation of what the next E will look like in '06.

w212 comes in 2009 so
w211 lasts 2003 to 2009? (6 years?)
w210 lasts 1996 to 2002 (6 years)
w220 lasts 2001 to 2006? (w221?)
w140 lasts 1992 to 2000 (8 years)
if you can wait for 7 years (sure, you can
) form now, you definitely can have w211.
W202 -> '94-'00
W210 -> '96-'02.
W220 -> 2000-?2005? (This is an exception).
So, the *seven* year lifecycle is the general rule MB has been following lately. The W210 E-class was released as a 1996 model, it was available during the fall of 1995. Since the new model is being released in the fall of '02, that's SEVEN, count 'em, seven years between.
The W220 S-class was released in fall of 1998 (or very early 1999) as a *2000* model because of the disappointing sales of the W140 S-class, which was cut somewhat short. Thus, it's due for a replacement in late 2005, probably as an '06 model. It will still have been available for seven years, notwithstanding the fact that the official production model-years might not by consistent with that.
MB's general approach seems to be release the new car, keep the same static exterior for four years, make a usually minor facelift (as the 220 S-class is going through now, and the W210 went through for the '00 model year) and then another 3 years of sales. Then the full-chassis change takes place.
MB used to have an 11-year lifecycle! The W126 S-class stuck around for that time, and I believe the W124 E-class was around for that number of years as well, usually with a couple of facelifts in the middle. In any case, I remember reading an article in the MBCA Star Magazine about how Lexus' competition got MB to shorten its lifecycle to get more competitive. In any case, you can generally count on a seven-year lifecycle, so it seems likely that you'll have to wait at least that long if you want the W212.

I think the 70s SL went 20 something years without a re-design!
The new one is great but I just think they could have built the W208 for a little longer as it was still very popular and a good design.
