E550 Among Top 10 Value-Losing Luxury Cars

Forbes includes the E550 among the top-10 value losing luxury cars, saying basically that it's over-priced and unreliable.

Actually, that's what I would say about Forbes Magazine. If you look at the article, Forbes thinks that the E550's competition includes the Lexus ES, which is a pimped-up Toyota Camry.

one thing that pazzles me is the resale value of it. How they came up with it?

Would you buy an MB E550 for $15,000 (26% of its original price of $59,000) or a Lexus ES for $16,000 (46% of about $35,000) five years later?

I think it is a no brainer - I'll definetely for an MB E550!

And also, they used the wrong model year becasue E550 just came for 2007 and quality should be lot better than prior model years. But in any case, I would get a MB E class over Lexus ES for the same price.

2004 E500

This is one of the reasons that I have a CPO E500. I got a great deal vs other choices. For the same money you can buy a new G35, Lexus ES/IS, Acura TL or some other "near luxury" ride. To me this is a no brainer.

You want to look at depreciation, check out an A8.

I love my E 550, but on a used car purchase, (3 or 4 years old) I'd go for the Lexus. You know what is said about a 4 year old MB? A 4 year old Lexus is more trouble free than a brand new E Class. (Pre MY 07)

That being said, I do believe you are right when you say that they (Forbes) really meant an E 500, and that they got the year of the car wrong. My '07 is nearly perfect. The '03s through probably mid 05... not so perfect, and a Manufacturer in denial.

The depreciation on an E (W211)is largely due to its well earned reputation. The '07s & 08s should do much to improve their desirablity and their resale. The Residual value placed on these cars for leasing is pure fantasy.
