Airmatic clunking from rear
DTB P-B-32.22/48 Clunking / cracking noises from rear axle while traveling between 25 and 45 mph during a load change (acceleration or brake) – all 211 vehicles equipped with Airmatic Suspension.
This may be normal operation of the suspension switching valves’ request for additional air volume. The energizing of the switching valves is calculated on the basis of the engine and braking torques, which causes the valves to switch in order to reduce the tendency of the vehicle to roll. Drive at a steady speed of 30 mph and operate the damper adjustment at stage 2. When stage 2 is activated, the switching valves are then powered up and the switching noise can be identified.
The dealer should actuate the switching valves for all four suspension struts using Star Diagnosis to amplify the volume. If one of the switching valves for one suspension strut is noticeably louder than the others, the air suspension bellow(s) will be replaced. The four valves should be equally loud in volume.
