Wiper clearance--cleaning windshield exterior
OK, maybe I'm missing something here, but what's the deal with the windshield wiper arms hitting the hood if they're lifted to anything greater than a 2 or 3 degree angle? Cleaning my windshield has become an exercise in the avoidance of gouging the paint along the rear edge of my hood. Am I missing some sort of whiz-bang MB button under the dash that positions the wipers so that I can wash the windshild without excessive contortions?

W211 not the only model with this problem...
I have the same problem on the SLK350. You need to postion the wipers at about 45 degrees, turn off the ignition, and then you can lift the wipers. On the SLK, if the wipers are at either end of the swipe, the arms will hit the hood when lifted from the windshield. I see quite a few MBs with chipped paint along the rear edge of the hood.

They changed the wipers on the '07. They can be flipped up from about 35 degrees, but lifted up to wipe the glass by about 6 inches while in the "parked" position. The ones on my '04 scraped against the back of the hood lip almost immediately upon lifting.

Doesn't appear that my '07 has that capability--it's an early build (pre-passenger mirror tilt decontenting) so maybe it still has the earlier wiper arms that bang into the hood...? As a last resort here, I'll check the manual.

Thanks, Barry, for the follow-up. What you describe fits my ride as well. I, unfortunately, have a couple of gouges in my hood, not my doing.... I think the maroon (reference: Bugs Bunny) at the service facility may have done this while performing a "courtesy" wash on my car after its service. Do me a favor, don't be so courteous.
