It has been over 100 degrees in Atlanta for the last two weeks or so and I have attempted to fob open the windows/ sunroof on our 2003 E-320.
I believe that this model has IR sensors on both front doors. Apparently the driver side sensor has failed and the passenger side works ONLY when standing directly in front of it and less than 10' away. This is not much of a feature (if normal). I have another vehicle that responds all the way out to about 100-125 feet and oblique angles do not appear to matter.
I have tried both factory issued fobs. The unlocking function works fine.
Anyone have better luck?

My car (2004 E500) is the same way. I can unlock from 50+ feet away, but to open the windows i have to be pretty close and point directly at the drivers door to open the windows. I know with the IR it needs to be a direct line of sight. Not sure what the range should be.

I guess you should have the auxiliary heater on your car. I don't mean you would use the heater at 100 F but you could switch on the cooling (blower motor) from even higher distance than the door locks.
The fact that the windows cannot be operated with the radio but with IR instead is intentional from MB.
