Is MBUSA run by amateurs?
First I call the 800 number and after being on hold for awhile I e-mailed MBUSA technical services asking about the E-class seats and what type leather care is recommended given that maybe a petroleum based product shouldn't be used on a coated leather, etc. and asking for recommendations. This is the response I got:
"Dear Mr. :
Your dealer sells a Mercedes-Benz leather care product,. Please speak with
the Parts Department of your authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.

So I call my Denver dealer (parts dept.) and he says they sell both the Meguiars and Lexol and have had no complaints. Lexol is petroleum based which many say shouldn't be used on a coated leather, only Leatherique or other water based product.
I guess MBUSA is not the place to call for technical car information - any guy on the street could have said call the dealer. I thought I was speaking to experts. Am I expecting too much from the US MB representative? Like they couldn't have forwarded my question to someone who had a clue. I'm disappointed that the place is run by amateurs when I'm buying a 65K car. They have not been that helpful in the past when I had fairy simple questions.

Well, if its any consolidation, I've called Toyota about my 1995 4Runner in the past, and they were as helpful as a rock in the middle of a desert.
I always assumed you can't call the main corp regarding questions like those and you should go to the dealer first. Maybe they assume that as well?

what she should have done is sent the question to someone in product management who could then contact germany etc. You won't get an answer for that question from practically any car company.

Yes you can use any leather cleaner on those seats
I have used Lexol for years with no ill effects. As for the coating, that is there mainly to reduce the leather "smell" (apparently some people do not like that rich aroma) and to improve wear for those people who do not take care of their cars for one reason or another (time, responsibilities, etc).

The MBUSA site is one of the worst automotive sites I've been to however. So I know the web dev team for the site are def amatuers or just plain lazy.
Even the German or UK site is 10x better.

The fact your particular dealer does not carry the Mercedes line of carcare products does not make MBUSA amateurs.
Since Mercedes sells an applicable product, why do you expect them to give you a technical treatise on all comparable products?

Leather treatment
Ok. I will stick to those who work only with leather (and auto detailers) but some of them don't know how MB seats are made - and MB isn't saying. It is good to hear that "Chairman" has no problem with Lexol. That was my main concern but if MB approves it and Meguiars for sale then one must assume they are safe as well as Leatherique, etc. From experience I still don't think MBUSA represents the mfg. very well.

Are you sure about that? To my knowledge, Lexol isn't, but Meguiar's is.

Honestly - I wouldn't expect anyone you get on the phone @ MBUSA to know anything about leather care.
Opinions vary even among enthusiasts and professional detailers.
IMO it would be nice - but not realistic.
At the very least they should be able to tell you that the leather is coated and to use an appropriate product for coated leather.

It is a good product, but the leather needs to ce cleaned before applying this product as it is only a leather preservative
