Pre-wired for BT '05 E500: Is it?
I keep reading that all models 05-08 are pre-wired for easy BT installation. All you need is a MHI BT unit and off you go.
I have 2005 E500 4matic (US version imported to Canada). When I had it in the dealership I asked them to quote the installation of MHI BT.
They said it's not "pre-wired" so the cost would be over $1,000
.
He said if it was pre-wired the cost would be around $500 (which is for BT unit).
So, is it possible that my '05 E500 is not pre-wired.
There are NO visible cables or plugs in the central armrest storage. Could it be that wiring is there and hiden behind the lining and my dealership is just being lazy?
Thanks,
tzar

I don't remember if this MY car should be prewired but if the dealer said it isn't, chances are it isn't.
For a prewired car one would need basically the cradle related parts and the control box, I believe also the compensator AND the BT puck. For a car with full MHI kit, only the BT puck would be needed. I assume the BT puck would be less than $500 in the US.
But I should not have written this partial info, you should find all of this and more from Skylaw's sticky at audio & telematics.

What exactly does one need to purchase with a new E to get bluetooth functionality? No wires, No cradle needed.
I think it's crazy that bluetooth is not standard on these cars by now.
Thanks-

As long as not all phones work with the BT solution, it does not make sense to me to have it standard. Some would need to buy a cradle in any case. And the cradle could not be standard as it must be phone model specific.
In Europe we have two different BT solutions, BT SAP and BT HF profile based. Of course you could still have the BT HF option standard, but it would not work everywhere.
