05/06 CDI owners... help please.
Need advise from 05 / 06 CDI owners.
Dealership checked with MBUSA on putting 17" OEM wheels on my 05 CDI. MB said they would have to put a note in my file that I would be excluded from any complaints about the cars ride. Seems that they will NOT approve any 17" or above wheels with the 05 CDI.
Yes I know I asked a question about this a while back but this new message from MBUSA is very confusing.
Is the suspension (non airmatic / non sport) that different from others? Has anyone done 17" wheels and can you tell me what effect on the ride comfort putting these wheels on had?
Don't what to make an expensive mistake.

I can understand their ride quality concern but 18 inch wheels are approved by MB for a 211.022 and a 211.026 car (not sure which one you are interested about), or just about any 211 model.

True DB. But the underlying issue here is MBUSA and the american consumer. If you upsize wheels you'll get shorter sidewall. That in turn will have an effect on how the car rides. In this case I believe that MBUSA is just covering their butt from possible action because of this. In Europe owners don't seem to be as picky on quality surveys as compared to over here (read posts on quality, decontenting, etc). And MBUSA is sensitive to that.

Here's what MBUSA says in a 2007 E-class brochure:

In addition to disadvantages listed by MBUSA, these tires are more expensive and will provide reduced traction in wet conditions.
The ONLY benefit in real world terms of larger wheels/tires is cosmetic.

I went from the OE "energy" 16" Michelins to 18x8 BBS wheels with 245/40x18 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires early on. The ride actually modestly improved, apparently due to the fact that the Michelins are very stiff (for low rolling resistance).
(The Goodyears ended up feathering and becoming obnoxiously noisy at low mileage, and now need replacement for this problem.)
