Question Where is the dip stick?

I just sold my 2004 C230 for a 2005 E320 CDI and having a problem checking the oil which with a diesel is very important. (I should know my daughter back in the 70's ran my rabbit diesel into the scrap yard - I saw the yellow light but...) The manual says it can be found on the multi function display. But with the engine hot or cold it does not display. I press the up and down arrow but nothing. Before I head to the dealer does anyone have any ideas??

Don't go to the dealer. There is a menu in the display that will give you an accurate reading of the oil situation. You should be on level ground. The engine should be off and the thing will want to wait a few moments after the motor stops. The manual will describe the exact button sequence. If not, someone here will give it to you. There is no dipstick in the oil tube. There is a difference of opinion as to the wisdom of using a sensor to provide such critical info. The only thing I can say is the engine does not use any appreciable amount of oil in the 10,000 mile oil change interval (for my gas burner)

Checking the oil is not any more important on a diesel than it is on a gasoline engine.

Your owner's manual index has an entry "checking oil level." All is explained there.

Ours has 27K miles now and has never needed a drop. Changed twice, i.e. every 13K miles as specified.

FYI, Mercedes eliminated the dipstick starting the 2001 models if i remember my information. Since as you all recalled that the free maintence was deleted on all new 2004 models and on. Kind of stupid but since we check with the menu on the display by going through the scroll button on the steering to check the oil level and next service due.

Dipsticks are missing on M112/113 and OM648.

They're back on M272/273 and OM642.

On my GL, at least, there is no dashboard check and I miss it.

They're back on the 2007 E550... no more checking thru the DIC is allowed.
