i got a quick question......we thought the 9 mph locking system was unsafe, so is there any way to lock all the doors right when the engine starts?

because we didnt pay over 70 grand for a car which you need to lock every time you get in.......thats very sad to me, our camrys lock when the engine starts, and even in the brochure, it states that you can do that

I dont know - my car locks as soon as I start driving off so it must be 9km/h here not 9mph.. Anyhow, read the manual and see if it mentions anything or talk to your dealer about programming - perhaps they could do something... Why do you assume 9mph is not safe? Kids? or bad neighbourhoods?

my mom doesnt like that fact that it doesnt lock the car once were in, if we go somewhere, and its heavy traffic in the mall or something, we might not hit 9 mph until we get on a real street, and that can be 5-10 minz, and we are not going to remember to lock the car every time we get in, so we think if it locks right when er get in, it will be better overall

I agree that this is a luxury car but since when were we so dependent on technology. Lock the car yourself or get an alarm that can do it for you.

but we are talking about when we drive off, if all the doors are closed, and the engine starts, the locks should lock

Tell your mom not to worry. It will lock almost as soon as you drive off: 9 kph or 9 mph is very slow. Really, oit locks as soon as you leave your parking place, way before you get to a real street.

I think if I was that worried about having my doors lock I'd move to somewhere I felt safe...

But think how annoying it would be if you hop in, start the car, and then have to manually unlock the doors almost every time because you started the car before everybody got in!!

I had a rental car a while back that locked as soon as you turned it on. I hated it. The stupid doors would always lock when I wasn't quite ready - like it I turned the car on befor emy passenger got in. They also would not unlock by pulling the inside door handle - you had to push the unlock button. Very frustrating.

At the time I decided then and there that I would NEVER have automatic door locks on a car.

The Mercedes locks do pretty well - even my paranoid wife likes them. 9 mph is pretty slow, they always lock once I'm moving at all. It is hard to stay below 9 mph even in a parking lot, unless you maybe are like pushing the car or something.

BTW, I'm pretty sure it's 9 mph or 15 kph.

if any of the cars doors are open, then they wont lock, but if all the doors are closed, then it will lock, so that way, you dont have to manually open any doors or anything

Is San Diego not a relatively safe place?

Locks

I agree..obviously they should lock as soon as the engine starts...however, sometimes, like in Canada, you might want to turn on the car to warm it up, and start to put stuff in the trunk, wipe the snow off, etc...so you won't have to unlock and lock...this way you have a choice...if you want to lock it right away, press lock, if you forget or drive off, it will lock automatically. 9mph basically means it locks as soon as you take off....I would just use the button...I'm sure Mercedes has a perfectly good explanation.

BMMS8,

I have no idea why you are concerned. I have been to your house and driven in your neighborhood before. You will hit 9 mph quite quickly, probably before you make your next turn. As far as heavy traffic, all you need to do is get rolling. I have hit 9 mph in the C32 on my DRIVEWAY, none the less a parking lot or similar.

Also consider that we do not usually go to areas that would neccessitate locking our doors at all. I think this is a petty issue you raise. Bottom line, there is no where in San Diego I can think of where you can't reach 9 mph, even in traffic. I think you underestimate just how slow it is for a car. Where exactly does your mom drive where she doesn't reach 9 mph for 5-10 minutes?

That's cool.

When I reached 9 mph, I was going forward. One day you should try backing out as fast as you can and see if you can get them to lock, lol.

Tomorrow I'm going to my Mercedes at 8mph to determine whether or not I deem this safe (Driving with the doors remaining open)...I will also try it backwards, and in various situations (i.e. rain, snow, parking lots, close to people)

vishal, actually the camry locks when it is engaged into reverse or drive. its pretty annoying imo. I think 9 mph locking is fine, maybe the dealer can change this setting.
