How is it possible...Playing DVD MP3's on US Command

So, has anyone other than us 2004 owners been able to get this to work? Seems like we're the only lucky ones. 
I think that the replacement 2003 cars and the 2004's were the only ones that had a dvd-rom fitted in the COMAND unit. Too bad that only the 2003's can play dvd movies.

I'm about to pick up a Command from another member and don't know if it's compatable with this DVD function. Is there a year or mfr. date on the Command itself so I can see if it's off an 03 or 04?

I don't think that the date of manufacture will be enough to tell you if it's a DVD drive or not. First thing to do is ask the vendor.

Hard to tell. Its hard for all of us to take out the COMAND Unit just to take a peek what's behind it. Ask him what year model his W211. I think that's the only way you can find out.

No, I understand people can't just "yank out" their Commands and tell me if there's a date, lol. A lot of people have installed Commands that didn't have them before and wondering if anyone noticed any dates. The Command that I'm thinking about is out of an 03 E500 but he got it from someone else so I'll ask him what year that car was.

Today I was planning to burn a CD with some MP3's on it, and realized I only had blank DVD's left. I said what the heck, lets see what happens. Burned about 2 GB of songs on the DVD, and tried it on my 2004 E500 and it worked and sounds great. I can navigate the folders just like a CD. Now im planning to burn my entire music collection to DVD and play them in the car vs using the IPOD and AUX connection.
Now, my question is how the heck is this working. I have read tons of postings on this forum, and they all say DVD is only on Euro Command.

Some 04s and some 05's had the ability to play mp3 DVDs. We have an 04 E320 wagon (build date 1/04) that plays mp3s. It required a software update for Comand to do so. I also had an 05 E500 (7/04 build) that played DVD mp3s from day one. My current 08 E550 will not. Apparnetly they made a specification change at some point to eliminate DVD player in the head unit (for the US) in favor of CD only.

I believe we can finally put this matter to rest until one of us figure out how to upgrade or downgrade the MP3 player in newer Command units without switching over to European Command.

FYI - My 2005 E320 CDI (late 04 build date) does play DVD MP3 discs. It encounters some skipping from time to time changing folders, but it does play them. I am trying right now to created an optimized way to create these discs, as most of my music collection is in Apple Lossless format. In OS X, I just used a program called Max to convert them to MP3 VBR 192 using LAME and used OS X to drag them to a blank DVD, and it works. I think the skipping that I encounter from time to time might be the ID3 tags and/or embedded album art. I am going to do some experimenting and see what happens. Sound quality was good overall considering MP3s are lossy.

AFAIK, 2007-2008 W211's (US, not sure about EU, etc) only have the capability to play CDs upfront in either the single slot or the changer.

SUCCESS!! I able to get my MP3 DVDs to play in my 2005 E320 using a Fujifilm DVD-RW disc and Nero software.
I discovered (through trial and error) that the software used to burn the disc has a lot to do with whether or not it will work in the car. My COMAND will not recognize discs created using Roxio Easy Media Creator (Quick Music DVD). Seems as though Roxio creates two folders (Audio and Video) on the DVD that the COMAND will not recognize. After reading this thread I switched to Nero Express and now the COMAND reads my MP3 DVD with no problems.
I'm not sure how many songs I burned to the DVD but it must be over 500. I used up the entire space of my 4.7GB DVD. It takes a few seconds for the COMAND to read the entire DVD when the COMAND is first initialized; however, it plays just like any other CD after that.
So there you have it. Confirming what a couple of other owners have already reported...MP3 DVDs do work in MY2005. BTW...my cars build date is 8/04.

I don't know why people are blowing out their brains using Nero, Roxio, iTunes, etc.
I've done simple clicks and drags into a burn folder using both a Mac and a PC and had no problems with any discs that I've burned (CD or DVD) for my MB.
