COMAND & CD player

In the e-Class brochure these is a little fine print line that says something like " CD may be played in COMAND when not navigating". Is this Mercedes-speack to mean that when the NAV system is on you can't also play a CD? None of the salespeople mentioned anything about this when I ordered the COMAND - and I did not order the 6 - disc changer because i thought the single player would be enough...

Anyone have any insight here?

I could be wrong, but I think you are right. A CD cannot be played in the single slot if you want to use the navigation. That is because the new navigation is DVD based and the DVD uses that slot. Our '03 SL has CD based navigation and the single slot is used for it. That is why we got the CD changer.

Here is an article on the E55 with in depth on the new Comand

http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...011.002&Page=1

I believe there is a module in the trunk for the Navigational DVD and the cabin slot is for VIDEO DVD and AUDIO CD.

Also check out the MB UK site for e class info

Here is the UK Link:

Seems to indicate a "boot" location for DVD module.

That's our trunk!

Cool. Is this the same system that we are getting in our E's? The article said:

There is a separate slot for video DVDs and audio CDs, and a connection point for an MP3 player.

So that is nice as well as the option for a rear seat monitor. wonder if that will be available too?

The nav system described in the Germancarfan site doesn't seem to fit with the US version E-series. If you ordered both the premium sound (Harmon) and the Nav...what happens to your premium sound. If you did not order premium sound and did order the Nav...do you get the same sound system as those who paid extra?
The reference to the short wave band seems to me to be European oriented as I don't know if anyone here has much interest in short wave band radio.

I had understood that the new US system would be made by Harmon-Becker. This does not say who is MFG (or I did not see it).

I am probably all wrong about this but somehow this feels European.

Wish MBUSA would put something out for those of us who have shelled out advance money. Seems like we should a least have a small description of what to expect. Wonder why they are keeping the information so secret.

I know the article seems European.. but guess what the car is!

Why would MB engineer a different NAV system for different countries or markets.

Just insert a different DVD and you have a car for a different market.

Probably 6 or 8 DVD's would cover all markets in the world with only one hardware set-up.

Change the software and standardize the hardware seems too make sense.

If this is the unit...what happens to the Harman-Kardon premium system that we paid for? The Nav module replaces the audio/radio unit.

The speakers would, of course, all stay the same so it would just depend on the quality of the replacement audio unit of the new Nav.

The UK site was posted some time ago and does not look like any of the information has changed. Still sounds like a different unit in Europe to me. The old command unit was different on European Models as are some of the other options on MB.

Hopefully MBUSA will give us some info soon. If it is out in February they should know what it is by now. Maybe not!!

:p

eTenn:

I agree with you Mb should have more info available by now!

In Canada we have less info than you have in the US, at least in your market you can order the Nav and get it installed later, in Canada all I get is "we don't know anything".... and "No we can not install it later at the dealership".

As a result I will not order my car until this Nav system is clarified and available for order here in Canada.

After MB spending 4 Billion to develop the new E... it seems so strange this delay for the Nav System and the total lack of info available for the North American market.

I am assuming if there is a difference in Hardware between Europe and North America that at least in will be the same in the US and Canada.

Does MBUSA handle Canada as well or is there another subsidery for Canada?

You can see on this forum that there are some differences (some times major) in the models in the US and Canada, UK, Austrailia, Panama, and some of the locations of other posters here.

I wonder if any of the UK posters know if the new Nav is available there? If so maybe they can give us an idea of what they have.

MBUSA is separate from MB in Canada.

I do not think they can talk to each other.

It is very frustrating to hear in the US you can order the Nav system at a reduced price! and then get a retrofit, but in Canada there is nothing but silence.

How can these two markets handle this so differently??????
