Rays/El Diablo Joe question
Yes its the same cup holder. And its crappy for many reasons, not the least of which is the little plastic squeezy thing that requires you to baby the cup into place. Clearly its a silly afterthought and not something considered as a primary need when the car was designed. Enough said - if the cupholder is your priority when buying a car this is not the car for you.
I think the robotic arm BS is just some German engineers way of intentionally poking fun at the need for a cupholder at all. I mean how can something be so ridiculoulously complicated and still be inadequate and annoying.
The previous E had a similar but better sized robotic cupholder (shared with the previous C) in was just as stupid but didn't need to be babied and held a decent sized cup.
The point is that when you are at this level of engineering it just isn't difficult to provide a decent cupholder - and its simply ignorant, or somewhat insulting and arrogant, and clearly inconsiderate of your primary market to produce such a crappy one. (Not that we don't appreciate all of the fine engineering in other parts of the car - after all we still bought it.)
Hey Mercedes (does anybody there ever read this?!?) - Next time you decide to engineer the interior of a car send some of your Chrysler buddies over to Starbucks and have them send you some samples of all of their cups, including the Grande and Venti (with the cardboard sleeve!), and the large Vente Frappacino cups.
Or I'll pay $200 for an aftermarket one that helps me with my Starbuck$ addiction.

If I put my grande starbucks house blend in there (mind you this is really not a very big cup...similar to a small McDonald's soda cup), it squeezes the cup to the point the lid sometimes pops off. And to grab it back out of that well to drink from it, ya gotta squeeze the top inch of the cup even more to get a grip on it to pull it out of that hellhole disguised as a cup holder. If you drop a soda can in there, stand-by, you'll never see it again.
The only thing that fits in there is a small sized (8 oz?) bottle of water. Maybe a baby bottle. But a 7-11 thermos of coffee, never. And that fold out karate-kid crane-move contraption only holds on to the bottom inch of the cup, which is not very stable. And just try to get your cup in there while holding that flange open, HA!
Yeah, sure. Some of you laugh. But some of us commute and spend a great deal of time in our cars. Part of that time is spent feeding an intense caffeine addiction, and coffee is an important part of our lives.
Kinda like buying a house, but you have a closet sized kitchen. So, did you buy the house for the kitchen, or to live in? If you bought it to live in, the what do you care if the kitchen cannot be used. I mean, geeeez, if you'd'a wanted to cook, *****, ya shoulda bought a restaurant. (Same logic as the "Did ya buy a MB to drive or drink coffee in?" argument).

On the cupholder, MBUSA offers several that fit in the cupholder with different capacities. Take a look at the MBUSA accessories store on line or at your dealer. Here is the link:

You can see there are insulated mugs from 8 oz to 14 oz. If that is not enough, then, well, perhaps a large insulated mug held between your legs with a long straw.................ouch!!!
but i don't see a reason for a cup holder at all. i don't let people drink in my car no matter how bad their breath...
maybe its an "American" thing, but to me, drinking in the car only makes it worse as it is proned to spill some point or another..
btw! what is the word that is on your Shift Knob? i have a wooden knob, but it doesn't have anything written on it.
