Ack!
Ack!! Why would anyone bring a diesel anything into the the US???
There's no mercedes benz I hate more than a turbo-diesel anything.
Everyone hates you, no one wants to be behind you, and everyone zips around you and cuts you off in retribution for blowing diesel crap into their lungs.
Why would MB do this, why? Why? Why?

I know what ya mean. Every once in a while I get stuck behind some bozo in an old 240D going up my hill. What a slow stinker. He's clueless to pull aside - even moms in their mini-vans flash their lights to no avail.
Actually, the new cars are much better, cleaner, quieter, and faster now than what you remember. If there's some big gas price kaboom they might not be such a bad idea.
Its gotta be better than one of those Cummings Dodge Rams or Ford F-350 V-10 Diesels. Now that's annoying unless the guy's using it for real work or hauling a big boat or trailer.

El Diablo Joe: you are so colorful!!! Well, I think the new generation of diesels will be pretty odorless, smokeless and fast. I had a 300SD and it wasn't bad once the turbo kicked in. But, my concern was finding diesel fuel at "nice" service stations conveniently located, rather than truck stops near truck routes. I almost ran out of fuel looking for one in bad neighborhoods one night!!

EDJ,
It's not as bad as it once was. I drive a F250 diesel which is a 7.3 liter and even when I step on it, it doesn't produce any black smoke. Manufacturers have done a lot to reduce the black cloud that once trailed behind my mom's 300D ( which I totaled before my 17th b-day ).
I would by a E diesel if I needed a car to last me as long as a diesel does. I put 40 K a year on my truck and need the diesel for hauling ( contractor and a nice heavy boat ) and to last me at least until I pay off the loan. A gasser would be rebuilt before the end of the payments.
I bet it would be clean, I like the sound, last and get better fuel economy.
Greg

Hi
The Co2 rating on the new diesels is lower than the petrol models, they do not smell of diesel and no black smoke and more miles to the gallon so even less pollution and cheaper to run. Engines also last longer. Only drawback is the noise compared to petrol and the sluggishness when cold.
As for enviromental issues. Please remind me who has 10% of the world population but creates 25% of the worlds pollution.

Some of you in the US are way behind in your awareness and knowledge of MB diesels.
In Europe, and particularly in the UK where fuel is nearly $6 gallon, diesel is becoming more popular, not simply becasue of the mpg, but because the new common rail engines are often faster than their petrol counterparts.
I have just bought my first diesel, an E270cdi, silver, grey leather, avantgarde, panoramic roof, FOLDING MIRRORS (not available in the US), 17" wheels as per E500 - and it is superb. Its way quicker than the 2000 e240 it replaced, and has nearly the same torque as the E500 - really it does - look for yourself - and 8 secs to 60mph - and the best bit - over 50 mpg at 55mph - or country driving you get low 40's. The trip computer shows a range of 700 miles +, although with town driving and short stops this realistically becomes 550 miles per tank.
I used to drive a tractor and could never forsee me driving a diesel car - but times have changed and you need to wake up to that - these cars are terrific. But then, having just returned from NYC and seen the big engined town cars and low low fuel costs its no wonder you drive 500's.

I agree, you do make your point... which is really not about the characteristics / pro's and con's of the recent advances of diesel technology, but more about your attitude toward's Americans' choice of transportation.
While I applaud diesel engines as a viable alternative for some, I think we can all live on the same planet without having to resort to the "we're better than you are" antics that are more the point of your last post.

I believe that this is the post that MMAT was referring to...not the one you posted from Marc77.
