COMMAND removal

Greetings all. Sorry for the boring post - I searched (honest) and could not easily find a good link to removing the COMMAND for my 2005 E500. I need help getting the dash apart, etc. I don't want to screw up the motorized CD changer window either.

I'm installing some video interfaces. I need lower dash dismantling instructions and center console (roll-type) instructions as well. I'm also running wires into the tailgate. (yikes) If someone knows any good write-ups, plz shoot my way.

Will I need some type of unlock code when I put the COMMAND back in? I'm not sure if I saw it anywhere in the car's documentation.

I'll post pics when done, promise.

And yep the US Spec E's have a limiter at 125 MPH, just tested it the other day.

Thanks for the info,

Smash

You don't need a code for the COMAND.

Did you try a search at the Audio & Electronics section too? I believe I have replied on the HU removal a few times, there should be some guides too, not sure if I found those and gave a reference. Can try to do it shortly if you don't find anything.

Thanks Diesel. You know, I searched for COMMAND, not head unit - let me try again. I still may need console instructions as well. Where in Europe are you? PM if you want.

I would suggest searching for "COMAND" instead of "COMMAND", although it may be that the wrong spelling is more popular .

Anyway, to remove the head unit from a W211, lift the gear leaver bezel from the front, remove the ash tray, remove the CD changer (two screws visible at each side), remove the two screws at each side of the HU, facing down, at the front. Unscrew all the way, then pull the unit out. At some point you should have taken care of the wiring harness and the fibre.

Diesel, from what I remember, the screws do not come out, they just move the "bracket" holder for the front of the unit up and down as you screw/unscrew. You should keep unscrewing until it stops (the screws will not come out) then you will be able to pull the head unit out. Someone correct me if my mind fails me.

Cheers

Yes, this is what I meant with "all the way" but this wasn't clear, good that you pointed this out.

when my audio tech was replacing my command unit, these are the steps he took.
1. remove the shifter cover(one with P D R )
2. remove the ashtray
3. remove the ashtry cover(the one with the door)
4. remove cd changer
5. remove command unit

everything was done with some screw driver and small plier

That wasn't very different from the advice given earlier. The CD changer screws are different from those holding the HU but both are visible and easy to figure out (once the ashtray has been removed).

Different in size but both are TORX screws.

Thanks very much - the spelling of 'COMAND' help my search efforts a lot...

Now hoping to find help dismantling the center console....screws easy to see/figure out ?

The whole car seems so solid - I hate to have to dismantle it.

Then there's the running wires into the tailgate...

Wish me luck,
