Is Flexible Service System (FSS) Plus based on Miles & Time Elapsed?
Hi all... its been a super long time since I've posted something on this forum. And yes, the first returning post is to ping you guys/gals for help/advice.
2003 E320 Sport w/ 54,000 miles
Last service was performed @ 49,000 miles in December 2006 (15mths ago).
Since my last service, 15mths ago, I've driven about 5,000 miles. My MFD displays "Service D in 5,809 Miles". I drive an average of 4 miles a day to pick up my daughter from daycare, thats about it.
Drilling down further into the service data, it shows:
Service Data
- 21M000000Q
- Weighting = 225
- Miles Remaining = 5,809
- Days Remaining = 190
Items
- 3,9,11,12,14
Special Work
- 1,2,3,5,7,8,9,11
I can decipher these Items & Special Work codes fine, but, my question is... Is my FSS Plus not functioning properly? It's been well over 1 year and it hasn't alerted me to perform the service. Should I perform the Service D now? Or wait until it alerts me that it's time to do the maintenance?

HOLY HELL, Danny!
Where in God's name have you been?
Anyway, I always thought the service intervals were 12 months or 12,000 as well.
My R500 had it's A service 2months after I had it because it's in service date was 10 months before that.
PM Konigstiger, he'll be able to tell you without a doubt.
Cya round!

mmgrad, we have an 03 E320. The FSS looks at both time and mileage. When whoever last reset the FSS at your last service, they must have picked "229.5 oil" instead of "standard oil." When standard oil is picked, the mileage counter counts down faster and the maximum time is a year (I think). When 229.5 oil is selected, the mileage counter counts down more slowly and the maximum time is 2 years (I believe).
If you want the FSS to tell you to change the oil once a year, tell them to select the standard oil option.
As to what to do, do a used oil analysis with TBN (google search blackstone laboratories) and you will have more info to make a decision.
Our cars oil level sensor started acting funny (reading low one day, and then normal the next). I changed the oil myself and the sensor was back to functioning properly. That would be one reason to change the oil a little more often than the maximum interval allowed by FSS under the 229.5 option.
