The real wait begins.

Yesterday I went down to my Mercedes dealer to drop my current Benz off for a service and confirm my order for my new E before the order went off to the factory.

I kept everything the same except that the salesman sugested adding "power folding mirrors" as there have been a few cases where Benz mirrors have been damaged in tight parking spaces and narrow roads and with the high replacement cost of the mirror/indicator, for the extra AUS $690 it's not bad insurance.

Also Australian W211 prices have gone up a grand for February production onwards so that was added to the total cost....damm!!

With confirming the order now the car will be delivered at the earliest at the end of April/early May 2003.

You guys in the States and in Europe have it too easy. Ha Ha !!

Let the wait begin.

Well it will be here for spring but I guess for you that would be fall. Good luck and I hope it is here early and in perfect condition. Congrats on the order.

BTW, compared to my previous cars/SUV's I have plenty of room on both sides of the car when pulling in and out of my garage so I'm a little surprised that the mirrors are being hit so frequently.

The long wait begins...but we are all here to wait with you (although we will be driving our new cars )

There was a question on another board about the mirrors folding. I have never seen an option in the US for folding mirrors. Maybe I just missed it.

Do the mirrors fold manually? I can get mine to move about an inch and then don't like the feel and don't go further. Do they fold?

I don't think the mirrors fold at all in the US though haven't tried forcefully. Kind of odd as I haven't seen a car that didn't have folding mirrors for a long time. I'm sure it will cost a fortune to have one of these babies replaced if you shear it off, kind of the reason they were developed in the first place.

Thanks for your support guys,I have watched as many of you get your new cars so don't forget me when mine finally arrives!!

Yes, they fold in manually but don't force them!!

With the electric versions I understand that they can be programed to fold in and out every time the ignition is turned on or off or just left for the driver to operate them when needed.

You can tell the cars that have them fitted as there are the two mirror selector buttons on the left of the mirror adjuster and the folding button on the right, whereas without it you have the mirror selector on either side of the adjuster.

US mirrors are fixed, the folding (power or not) is not an option. There's a large gasket/seal fitted between the main mirror housing and the door to help reduce wind noise from airflow over the mirror housing.

Not good. I'm dreading the day some parking lot attendant bangs my mirror off.

Well I did say don't force them!! Ha ha ha!!!

Now I'm really glad the salesguy talked me into the folding mirrors after finding out they don't manually fold at all.

I'm not sure I want to fess up how I know, but I can confirm that the mirrors on a US E320 will give a good bit, nearly all the way laterally toward the side window. It pivots at the gasket and snaps back if it has not been pinned against the side window. It may not snap all the way back to position, and may need to be manually pulled/snapped into place.

At least that Christmas present in the big cardboard box I was hiding in the garage didn't scratch anything!

In case you want to try and order the folding mirrors from your dealer, the MB option code is:

#500 Electrically folding exterior mirrors.

W212 E350 AMG E63 Pack.
Callaway: Dont worry pal, we will be on your side waiting for your car as well you did with ours. On a side note, I did notice that my car has the option 500 which is the power folding mirrors.

I just figured out how to find your car in shipping once you have a VIN.

see this thread for details

Geeez...I wish that had been posted while I was waiting. It would have taken a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding out of the waiting process.

If you have a car in the loop...keep asking your dealer until he tells you a build date and then after that date ask him for the vin number...that is when it is available to the dealer.
