What the )*&# is up with the Gas in Boston
k.. now that I have your attention, has anyone had there check engine light go on shortly after refueling?. Lastweek, filled up at Mobile with 93 and mid-week check engine light went on, called the dealer and he warned me on the phone that every other call was a check engine light call and it was due to tainted 93 and 91 octane gas bring sold in Boston and Southern NH.
The EPA was at the dealership and took a sample from my car and inquired about the gas station. Apparently this is happening on Mercedes and Audi cars only and in the Boston and Southern NH area gas stations.
Brought it in anyways had them look at the code and sure enough it was the gas. They reset and I refueled at a different station today with a lower octane (89) and on the way home (tank was near empty) 20 miles later the flapping thing came on again. Now I'm pissed.
I just found out that not only is the EPA investigating but the local news stations as well. Great, pay $4.25 a gallon and end up putting **** in the fuel tank. What gives

Both Mercedes and Audi are doing independent testing of the gas and will inform the dealers and EPA of the problem. Stay tuned, this could get ugly

I need to get gas tonight, so I'll bring a sample home for ethanol testing. The last time I did this, the ethanol level was at its required 10% from a Shell station I normally go to.
Thanks for posting the info.

Don't usually post here, but had to chime in when I read this thread. Had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. Dealer told me it is only happening with high test and to run mid-grade gas until they sort out what's going on. I was told that all the gas in the Boston area comes from just a couple of holding tanks and the the problem is mainly within about a 70 mile radius of the North shore. I was given the impression that they're not thinking it's bad gas, but rather some new additive that the cars can't handle properly. The dealer reset the light on my car, but it came back on the next day. I waited for that tank to empty and then filled with mid-grade. The light went out on it's own after about a week.

That is what I did, filled with mid-grade and shortly after driving 20 miles+ the light came back on. Dealer told me to give it a week and continue to use the mid-grade until the EPA along with Mercedes has completed testing on the gas. Why the additive (if that is what it is) is isolated to the Boston / Southern NH is beyond me.

Makes me glad that I flew to Manchester, NH last weekend instead of driving the E350 which was the original plan. Hertz gave us a Ford Fusion but it only used regular grade so didn't have a problem.
Went for my niece's graduation from high school. Was planning a driving trip all over New England and upstate New York (where I lived and went to college back 34 years ago) but decided that we didn't have the time. So we flew up and back last Thursday through Sunday.
Maybe we'll drive up next summer for my 35 year reunion . Hope they resolve the issue soon. Keep us posted.

Had problems starting my bike this spring, searched out and bought Sunoco 94 specially for it. No go.
I drained it and bought some more. Same thing. So I thought bugger this, went out and bought Shell 91, locally. Bike fired up immediately. I think maybe so few people need or buy the 93-94 , it gets stale in the storage tank.
Any ideas?

Have been using Sunoco and CEL came on in June.
Bad news is that codes show all (4) O2 sensors bad and need replacement.
Good news is here in MA, O2 sensors are warranty covered, by law, for 8 years or 80,000 miles.
