What engines will be available on the W212?
For anyone who may be in the know or want to take a WAG, any thoughts on the future W212 engines on the non-AMG models?
Audi has now introduced a supercharged 3.0 V6 that will surely go into the base model of the A6 next, and BMW has the turbocharged 3.0 I6 that has garnered some good reviews. IMHO this leaves the 3.5 V6 in the MB as the next engine due for some updates - will MB go FI or stay with NA?
Plus with BMW likely to offer the TT 4.4 V8 from the X6 and the recently announced F01 7-series, MB and Audi will likely need to respond to "keep up with the Joneses", wonder what MB can do to the 5.5 V8 to increase power without adding the fuel consumption burden - FI also?
All opinions welcomed...

The first few years will be carryover engines from the w211.
A little before the facelift, there will probably be new engines.
Mercedes has followed this schedule for decades--just go back and review.

If that information is correct, then the direct injection engine would place at least the horsepower number in the same league as the FI equivalents from BMW and Audi - wonder if torque would be similar at ~300 lb. ft., which is what really sells here in the North American market.

But there are indications about a diesel hybrid too, that engine would definitely not appear on the old W211 body.

I'd say some kind of 3.5L V6 with around 300hp and the 5.5L V8 with direct-injection and 400+ hp so it provides more power and doesn't get any thirstier. Next E63 should get around 550hp, no turbo until facelift.

But doesn't this engine belong to the "carry over" engine models as lkchris explained, the 350 CGI on the current W211 gives 215 kW/292 PS, 365 Nm torque.

But good point, the 350 CGI motor (evo magazine in the U.K. has a CLS 350 CGI in its long term fleet right now) would add more oomph to the 3.5L without a penalty on fuel economy, now it'll just have to make it across the Atlantic.
Agreed...adding direct injection to the 5.5L V8 would also enhance the engine without the penalty on fuel economy. Is it generally agreed that a direct injection 5.5 would make 400+ bhp compared to the current engine?
