"bong bong bong bong"! (what is it?) (UPDATE)

06 e500.

75 mile drive using nav and playing an MP3 CD in the slot of the CD changer...The radio dims and Four "Bongs" (bells?) sound out. About 20 seconds later, radio dims again and for more bongs.

No messages of any kind (I scrolled through). Parking brake was off (as I was still in the city about a 2 miles from my destination.

I was thinking it was the nav system telling me I'm almost home or to turn. But, it did it every 20 or 30 seconds. I turned off the nav and it still did it.

This 4 "bong" thing happened about 20 times. Then I pulled over and shut off the car, restarted. Didn't happen again.

What could it have been?

Update: as discussed below, it definately was not the seat belt minder. The seat belt minder is a "ding ding" sound and does not dim the radio. This was definately like a nav command prompt BONG with the radio dimming as it came on (4x in a row).

Still no clue as to the problem, if any. I thought maybe it was the MP3 disk that I burned....? No one has heard of this before?

Is the bong-bong-bong sound the same as the tones when you drive off without the seat belt fastened? Perhaps there was an issue with the seatbelt switch? Just a thought. If I can remember correctly, I beleive I got 4 bongs in a row periodically when the seat belt was detached. BTW, same goes for the passanger side as well.

I would say it sounds like that.
Maybe an anomaly of some sort. I'm not sure how to explain that one to the dealer, as it's NEVER going to do it when I take it in.

Both front seat passengers were buckled up. Although...maybe the passenger did unbuckle...I'll never know. The seat belt sign was never lit, though.

Anyway. it's not doing it today. If I figure it out, I'll post it here.

Well, if it is the seat belts, did the seatbelt light go on as well?

I'm trying to remember what conditions make that sound. Doesn't the parking break warning make that sound when driving with the break on? If it does it again check the speedo if the red parking break warning is on. Checking the dash warning lights when to tone happens, would be one way to diagnose what sensor or system is faulty.

Updated the orig post. Seems that it was definitely not the seat belt minder.
