I dont know about everyone else but i prefer to press specific buttons that will do specific jobs.....e.g. press a button that will heat your seat.....rather than going through a joystick that brings no joy and findind the location of heated seats and then clicking okay I think it is more stylish pressing buttons than the I drive system tht BMW has implemented.........thts my choice anyway

The difference between then and now is that the speedo reads 14k miles and the instrument cluster is from the Classic outfit - without the chrome rings around the speedo, clock and tach and speedo is calibarted with a 10 km/h step (doesn't have the 5 km/h increments marks).
Dipsticks at the dealership installed it when changing the cluster. Now they will have to change it again putting the proper one in.
From the whole MB ownership experience so far dealing with the aftersales service has been the least pleasing part. Really leaves a whole lot to be desired - the car is good, the rest is s***.

Akmal31 i second your opinion, the new idrive system by BMW is crap, bmw have always been critisised on their ergonomics specifically a/c and stereo controls, its said there are too many buttons for comfort , i think they decided to fix that but have safeley achieved overkill. I am a gizmo freak and will prob learn to use i drive within a few mins since i use cell phones and other electronics that all have menus that have the same hierachy system as idrive, but im not ur average 7 series buyer am i , if granpa (or just pops for that matter) has to dish out all that loot, unless he was a developer or or very dedicated idrive is an ergonomic nightmare, and all the reviews have reflected this, i suppose a dot com millionaire might enjoy it, oh i forgot those days are over arent they? that bieng said even if i did know how to use idrive fiddling through it while driving just to turn the base up a notch is too much effort, we used to have an s class and using comand (which is simpler that idrive) to adjust sound was easy enoug at a light but while driving it was hell! just as a comparison, and im sorry but i will use the l word, the Lexus has three little dials for treble, bass and midrange, effortless. Mannual well laid out controls can never be replaced by gizmos like idrive
nough said i think?

enough said and well said i read a review of the seven series.....and they played a little game where they had to do different tasks with the I-drive and they timed themselves..... here are a few resluts that i can remeber:
Play track 7 on cd 5 = 25.5 secs
go to radio 5 = 18 secs
select maximum ait to footwells = 21.7 secs
check average miles per gallon = 9.6 secs
come on, if you try to do them in the new E or S or a lexus or whteva car it is......im sure it wont take even half the time to do them tasks.......just goes to show how pathetic the I-drive is

I-Drive

I had the "pleasure" of taking a BMW 745 on a long test drive before I bought my E500. Fortunately the car has a lot of safety features because I almost wrecked trying to navigate through the I-Drive system while driving. The technology is incredible, but the ergonomics leave a lot to be desired.

We did a test ride in a 745il and the saleslady had such a darn difficult time on the i controls... I just said let's look at the 545i... Got into that and when I put the seat back to fit my legs, ( I am 6') the B pillar was right next to my face.....

MB was next stop
