Convenience & Battery Protection Temporarily Not Available

This is covered in other posts here, but worth posting again. I kept getting the subject error on my 2003 E500 that has 15,000 miles on it. That's right, 15000 miles and it's Sep '08.

I had originally bought the car from Park Place Mercedes here in Dallas.

This problem would only show up when I was running the headlights. I took it in for service. They told me the aux battery was bad and replaced it for almost $300 and it wasn't covered under my extended warranty.

It kept showing up again and again. I took it in for service and the techs told me everything was fine.

I noticed my lights were modulating (flickering). I took it in again and the lead tech told me flicking was normal. I proceeded to tell him that if I had bought the E63 my salesman was trying to sell me last month, and it had this problem, I would feel compelled to drive it through their ******* showroom windows.

I explained flickering of headlamps and other lighting in the car, with the headlights on, represents either an alternator or regulator problem.

I explained there was a recall on the regulator. He said it had already been done. I said check it again; fix the problem. They kept the car for two days and finally called Mercedes tech support and received the direction to replace the alternator regulator and re-flash the battery control module. Viola! The lights stopped flickering and the subject error is gone. All this covered under my extended warranty.

Just goes to show that I either got a wall job on the first regulator replacement or Mercedes still has bad regulators sitting on the shelves and they're putting them in our vehicles.

I liked the idea of driving it through the showroom window!

Another option is that the parts were not changed at all at the first service, just the paperwork done?

Never know but bad old parts from shelves should not be the explanation.

Very good for you that you were persistent and got the issue solved, it is unfortunate that "shy owners" would remain struggling with these issues.
