Mercedes E-Class E270CDi
Heater core / exhange and Steering wheel problem

Hi Guys,

I have an E270CDi 2003 Avantgarde. Recently I have noticed a strong smell from the air vents. Someone reckons I might be a heater core problem. The mentioned sometimes the heater core piping inside the core may crack or corrode ?? Is this correct, I was under the impression that heater core piping inside the fins are exposed to moisture anyway, therefore, should be rust/corrode proof ???

Also my tilting steering has stopped extending fully out.

I went to my local Mercedes dealer here in London but they want to charge my £100 minimum just to sit in the car. Does anyone have any advice on my 2 problems and also are there any schematics and diagrams, or pictures of behind the dashboard and of the heater core, steering rack. I may take to checking the car out myself with some help.

Thanks guys

Could you describe the smell ? I had a problem with my C Class when I got it. The vents of the car would smell like burnt oil whenever you started the car in the mornings. I took it to my dealer twice but they were unable to reproduce the problem. Finally the third time they smelt it also and it turned out there was a small crack in a seal and a drop of oil would drop onto the hot engine and that is what I smelt. They ended up replacing the seal and everything was OK after that (it was under warranty).

It smell like a sweat smell, and condensation appears on the windscreen.

Thanks guys

Try to have a mechanic(doesnt have to be an MB guy) sit in the car.He will determin in a second if it is leaking coolant..Otherwise you might just have the rotten water in the vents but my guess is coolant.
Good luck!
