e550 versus e550 4matic

Drove an 09 e550 and and 08 e550 4matic today....The latter was a demo that the owner's wife was driving...I was very impressed with the E550 7 speed and much less so with the 4matic...The 7 speed felt a lot faster...Could it be that the 5 speed adaptive tranny was not "used" properly? I was told she drove that car very slow...I was looking to order an 09 e550 4matic once the lease on my e55 is up, but now having second thoughts....

My personal opinion would be to keep the E55 if you can keep it in Warranty (if that's what you're asking). Fact is we always want that "new car" feeling again, but if you get the E550 (great car), I feel after the newness wears off, you'll figure you spent more money and got less car. Plus the new Body's coming out next year, albeit looking awful so far, and the newness of owning an '09 will only last so long. IMO go with what you feel is going to be an overall more fun car and more timeless to you, I say hands down an AMG 55.

Just IMO, of course this is considering you can keep the 55 in Warranty.

Also, 4-Matic robs some HP to the wheels and is alot heavier, coupled with the 5 Speed and the RWD version should definitely be considerably faster.

U kinda answered your own question when you said "I need awd for winter".

BUT I'm with you, I test drove E500 4matic, and RWD E500, and chose RWD. 4matic launches better, (both launch like a bat from hell), but there's nothing like V-8 RWD, AND the 7spd is like butter.

Have you considered snow tires on your RWD? I'm sure they use RWD in Germany during winter. I've got snow tires on my FWD Maxima, and its unstoppable in snow. I would think coupled with traction control, the E550 RWD should be decent with snow tires?????

Good luck. Hate to see you part with the AMG...

I live on Long Island & don't use snow tires... Of course L.I. is almost all flat.
