The dreaded D+ service

Hi everyone. Instead of an indy shop, I ended up back at the dealer (Laguna Niguel) for service. Car is a little over 48k miles. The car said it needed D+ service.

The dealer gave me a loaner and said the car really only needed an A service, intake filters, and recommended alignment since my tires are pretty much brand new.

Cost as follows:

$167 - A service
$130 - Intake filters
$130 - Alignment for all wheels

You can do your filters for under $50.00 and ten minutes of your time.

At what mileage interval should the air filters normally be changed? I thought I saw a posting on this forum about service requirements that they should be replaced at the 60,000 mile point. I have 59,000 on my 2003 E500 and not sure they've ever been replaced yet. Also, guess I should use the MB-brand filters instead of the K&N brand.......I'm thinking of doing it myself since my next A or B Service isn't due for another 10k miles.

Definitely something to remember for the future. Now that I'm searching through past posts, I am finding all the info on air filters. Earlier I was in a rush, so I didn't look at parts cost, etc.

For a mechanical idiot like me, I can still do air filters myself.

You win some, you lose some. I actually won in Vegas a few months back, so I consider myself ahead. I'll put the air filter markup and labor on the Vegas trip.

Filter swap on our cars can be done by a blind one-armed midget using a butter knife. It's pretty easy and cheap.

Here's what mine looked like at the 55K mark. Pay particular attention to post #17.
