Installing A Transmission Cooler Instead Of Replacing Radiator

HI,

I have the infamous 2003 Model with the Valeo radiator. I have been contemplating ordering the updated part from MB. I read in a post here that someone simply pulled the lines off of the transmission and installed an aftermarket transmission cooler. I PM'd the user but have not revieved a response. Has anyone else tried this? It sounds like a much easier task than replacing the radiator- and much less expensive as well. Thoughts?

I guess this would need a thermostat based by-pass in order to avoid oil being cooled when it hasn't reached sufficient temperature?

Usually you install the tranny cooler inline after the radiator. The reason why you do this is in cold weather you need the heat to warm up the fluids faster. But you can install the tranny cooler by itself....

We on a positive note I live in Florida- So we have maybe 2 weeks out of the year that it might get down to 55 during the day- I mean I ski in January

My Landcruiser has an external tranny cooler and it does not pass through the radiator-

Thanks for the advice- keep it coming. I can buy a tranny cooler for under 50.00- i just need to take a look at the piping under the car to see where to cut the lines and attach the cooler. I was hoping the member in Canada might drop by and let us know how his install went.
