Dings

Our salesman keeps telling me that MB's are made with thicker door panels and resist dings. Can't say I have seen one dinged. Our SC400 got the cr-- beat out of it at work and the airport and malls.... Got them repaired over time but is it true the MB is better made in that dept?

Two weeks ago, just after pulling into a parking space, the passenger door of the car next over swings open directly into my driver side door. There was a loud bang as the two doors met. A woman hops out, shuts her door and proceeds to walk away. I get out and ask if she realizes she just dented my door. She looks back and says she had no idea her door could do any damage, and continued to walk away.

The good news...for $75 the dent was removed and cannot be seen. Had the paint been broken the cost would be much higher. The doors will ding when sufficient force is applied. Over the last five years I have repaired 11 dings. The only one that did not smooth out was on the gas cover of my last E320. I am certain it was done by an Excursion.

Among the most irritating things to me is no matter where I park in a lot, even at the most remote sections of a lot, a large truck, usually the largest on the lot will park within inches of my car. The car is like a magnet for large, beefy, pointy trucks.

I would have pulled out a pliers and yanked out a couple of her valved stems. The towing and aggravation would have evened the score.

With my luck, a police car would be passing by just as I was pulling out a valve stem.

It's that don't give a damn attitude that I can't stand.

I think I would have given her a dent- to the head.

Sadly, this area has grown rapidly over the last 10 years, and with the growth rude, careless, violent attitudes and behavior have come to dominately characterize the population. This situation is expressed most often on the road. I feel safer in the MB, and expect someone will run into me eventually. Just today, surveys report that 60% of the congestion and traffic delays are caused by the drivers. The remainder is from construction, overburdened roads, etc. The Benz is a great comfort.

Isn't the insurance company of whoever caused damage responsible for the repair cost? I'd report the incident along with her license plate to the police, then demanded compensation from her insurer.

that's a good question.

next time maybe i'll try that instead of keying the woman's car or pulling her valve stems, etc.

a friend of mine once was waiting for a guy to pull out so he could park. it was up in san francisco near the MUNI station. guy pulls out but another car quickly parks in there, shuts the engine off, and group gets out. of course this is while my friend is sitting there honking his horn, etc.

friend gets out of the car and tells the group that he was waiting there...they give him a quick "you snooze you lose" type of comment and walk away.

friend sits there mulling over what just happened. luckily enough he had his old bb gun in his trunk so he pulled that out, shot up all of the glass in the other guy's car, and drove off. luckily the cops didn't see him and it was in an area where most people would either mind their own business or a few saw what happened so they felt the group had it coming.

needless to say, he just went home...didn't go shopping that day.

Rock.

Ha! Can't say he didn't deserve the punishment. But with Big Brother watching they might pull a tape from somewhere - then try explaining yourself in court.

Risking offtopic - ETR 407 in Toronto. People driving on that stretch of highway are identified by photos of their license plates (what the hell else are they photographing?!) , then you receive a CAN 5 bill for each incident of your appearance on their candid camera - until you purchase a CAN 60 (I think) transponder. Forgive me if I misinterpreting their intentions, but that is truly outrageous.

You are certainly better off being caught on tape letting the air out of the tires than shooting out the windows with any type of gun.

Air out of tires -- police would not show up
Any type of gun (that doesnt shoot water = jail

BTW, can easily pull out the valve stems???

Don't pull out the whole stem. Just jam a match or toothpick into the top of the stem and let the air leak out, or go buy a stem removal tool and simply unscrew the insides.

Takes too long. Jab with an ice pick on the sidewall will be more efficient! :p

Gee, can't believe I am suggesting this, but this woman's attitude gets me on my dark side. Guess we are all MB fanatics, one way or the other. ROTFL.

Cutting tire involves actual property damage. Pulling valve stem is a nuisance. If you did get caught there's a good chance police would let you go because you did no real damage. Unscrewwing valve is even better. Couple turns should let the air out slowly. Not that I've ever been lucky enough to catch someone dinging my doors.

Sounds like a good reason to ask for bigger raise!

This thread talked enough about letting air out of tires, let's discuss women's attitudes now

Dings - Shopping cart

I and my family were entering our car, when the local sporting goods store was gathering shopping carts, and one went astray and smacked the front of my car, with a small noticeable ding. I confronted the employee, who saw the event and then said that there was no damage, then confronted the store manager, who said they couldn’t see the damage, even after I showed it to them and used a CC to show depression caused.
Any suggestions on how to handle a situation with liars such as these?

But to get back tothe original post- Are the door panels better or is the Salesman full of hype? If they are thicker, great, but if not I just don't want any false expectations.

I think the angular cut of the door panels will help avoid some dings as well.

Seems to me like something not worth fixing, so not much chance of payoff. Bus ask your attorney to write them a nasty letter asking for compensation for aestetic damage or something. Hopefully you got the names of both employee and manager to include in the letter.

there's still honest people in the world..

Coming out of a shopping mall I didn't notice a big dent on my passenger door on my previous escalade until I saw a note on my windshield where a lady explained she accidently dented my door while getting out of her car and to give her a call to fix the problem. I called her after I got a quote to fix it and she paid 200 for the repair.. Very honest person.

I have a decent-sized ding in my driver's door. I noticed it before I bought it, but didn't care, as it was barely noticable. I never even see it unless I look at it from certain angles, especially after I clean the car really well. I noticed I have three very slight crease-like dings on my front passenger's door, as well, but same deal - barely noticeable and not worth repairing until something worse happens. I used to have a Lexus, and I had vertical creases, horizontal creases, round dings, you name it all over and they were very noticable, and all occurred w/ in few months of getting one whole side redone. So I would say MB's may be more ding resistant than some, but def not ding proof.

I have had multiple door dings and have been able to get them all repaired to where you would never notice. I don't believe the door panels are any thicker than others.
