Gas odor when tank is full

It's really up to NHTSA now and more complaints would help our case to prompt an investigation. That's why we need the members to file the complaints regardless whether you have already paid for the repair yourself. Because when the agency mandates MB to fix the gas leak problem, those of you have paid for your own repair, will get MB to reimburse your cost. MB would not do anything unless it's from the agency.

I'm having the same smell issue on my 06 C350. Is it possible that I have the same problem? FYI I have 400 miles left on my 7/100k extended warranty. Should I take it in before it expires?

I would suggest that you do take the car to the dealer to see whether it's covered because extended warranty is not bumper to bumper coverage, AND file a complaint with NHTSA because this is a safety issue not a warranty issue.

Leaking fuel sensors on Mercedes Vehicles...
Defective products are not just inconvenient for consumers. When products fail due to bad designs or manufacturing flaws, they can cause injuries and cost consumers significant financial loss. Manufacturers have a responsibility to comply with industry safety standards and " to WARN consumers" of any potential dangers. If physical injury or financial harm results from their failure to do so, and when other consumers have suffered losses similar to yours, the manufacturers may be held legally responsible through class action lawsuits and complex multi-district ligation (MDL).
Leaking fuel sensors on Mercedes Vehicles...
Everyday I run into more people with this problem the dealers and Mercedes Benz Corporate are a$$holes about it .If you are lucky they may cover half of the parts and charge you the labor to repair/replace the leaking sensors. Just hope that your gas tank does not need to be replaced. They are getting hundreds of calls a day on these Leaking tanks and sensors. This will end bad for Mercedes One day in the near future someone's house is going to burn to the ground because of leaking Fuel in the garage next to the water heater.
My wife had the problem in her CLK550 2007 The dealer Fletcher Jones of Newport Beach Gave us nothing but trouble and getting the problem fixed her car has 7000 miles on it.
Shame on Mercedes Benz of America and Fletcher Jones Motorcars of Newport CA
For NOT doing the right thing for their Customers. This is a Serious fire and explosion Hazard. The fix can run 1300 dollars all the way up to 3500 dollars if you need a new fuel tank. The estimates online say that as many as a million vehicles are using these defective Sensors (I think it is a lot more)
Keep in mind these sensors are located directly under the rear passenger seats under a access panels. In my wife vehicle we actual smelled the gasoline in the cabin and the garage. Also note all of the leads and electrical lines going into this sensors in contact with the raw fuel/gasoline.

Hello,
Just wondering if your 1997 C230 was ever fixed due to its fuel odor problem? I have exact same model and year and it's everything they say here in the thread. I'm finding the NHTSA are only covering the E class but in every case it has to be the same in all of their models.
It's got a very strong odor that will seep up to my 3rd level condo from the garage. My boyfriend was so worried he told me to park my car outside. I only fill my tank 3/4 full from then on because of this issue. Thanks for your reply!

Welcome to the forum brownie.
Your car likely has different problem as the above apply to specific tanks under rear seat.
Cost the question in your class section and they should give you precise advise.
With fuel leak I would not drive the car at all and your boyfriend is right to park the car outside.
18 years old might have lot of aging components, so take it to qualified shop ASAP

I believe if you had your tank replaced and paid for it yourself you can file a claim with MB for reimbursement.

Go to your dealer and tell them you smell gas when the tank is full. There is probably some fuel puddling on the top of the tank under the rear seat. It's easy enough to pull the seat up to see if there's any fuel there.

2005 E500 Wagon
Felt like I should revive this as I finally did take my vehicle in for this issue and ran into some snags that are still not worked out. In order to remove the fuel tank, they have to remove the exhaust...but they claim one of my connectors needs to be replaced and is only a part of the muffler so they say I need a $600 muffler. I still haven't had any luck getting them to cover this.

Funny you should say that. They have made a recommendation that they will take the exhaust off, replace the tank, and put it back and I will need to take it to a muffler shop to have it welded together. I'm fine with that honestly.

My 2004 E320 had the Tank replaced at the dealer for free. They said it was covered under the extended gas tank warr.
Before I took it to them I lifted the rear seat and removed the covers where the fuel pump sit's, there was gas on top of the tank.

My 2007 W211 developed a strong fuel smell from the outside of the car with a full tank - absolutely no smells from inside the car. I took it to the dealer, who immediately noted that it was probably my fuel cell. I had the tank and all seals replaced all under the extended warranty (to the tune of ~$2800). Dealer gave me no hassles.

I had the gas tank replaced in 2011 on my 04 e500, before MB extended the warranty.
At the time, the 3rd party extended warranty did not approve of an OEM tank, only a off branded one, so a major chunk of change was out of pocket. Guess I need to file a claim, since I just found out about this letter.
The tank started leaking again this week. I may be out of luck this time around, since I am beyond the 15 yr period (Oct 2003 delivery). Seems like this tank only lasts about 8 years at a time, which is very disappointing.
