Will my new 2008 E280 Elegance install the Comand APS with GPS as plug and play.!!

Hi,

I am planning to buy an E-Class E280 Elegance loaded except heated seats, ventilated seats, and dynamic seats!! and of course a normal COMAND APS system without navigation but with bluetooth.

The car is a European model car, I have noticed that the car has an Antenna up the ceiling near the back shield window (the black piece) there, I opened the trunk and I saw a place for the DVD navigation unit, does that mean that I can get a new full COMAND unit and just plug it in place of the old one and I plug the DVD unit in the trunk and I would have the navigation configured up and working!!

What about the DVD....

Please any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks and best regards.

I think most of the members on mbworld are from the US/Canada and may not be familiar with that model as it is not sold in the US. You might PM Diesel Benz as he is from Europe and may know - or try www.benzworld.org as there are more Euro users on there.

Does the COMAND you are referring to have the full screen LCD or is it a smaller LCD screen? If it is a full screen, you should be able to add the DVD Navigation processor to the trunk to get Navigation. I am not familiar with the smaller LCD-based COMAND units, which I think are referred to as the COMAND APS.

Thanks for your response, the car has the COMAND with the smaller LCD (not the navigation), but I noticed that there is a space in the trunk that fits the DVD-Navigation unit and has the black antenna over the top of the car......

I have no experience with those cars and that particular unit, but I do *think* it will support navigation - just without displaying the map on the screen. You might want to consider replacing the COMAND APS with the larger COMAND to get the map.

I would wait until someone more familiar chimed in before purchasing anything.

Thanks again for the quick response, thats exactly what I am planning to do, but will I just plug it in replacing the old one or do I have to temper with the car wiring and all these things!!!

Again, most of the users are from the US or Canada here, and will not know the answer to your questions. Perhaps you should get the Mercedes technical sheets on your unit. Subscribing for a day is cheap you can print out all the parts and how to sheets you want then. It might be plug and play, but it could just as easily also be a wiring nightmare. We don't know.

If you could let us know your VIN (PM if you don't want to post it), it would be easier to say what you actually have and what would be needed for Comand APS retrofit.

When you say it has "the smaller Comand but no navi", I'm afraid it has an Audio 20 head unit. The other option, if not Comand, in Europe would be Audio 50 APS but that would come with navigation (Europe does not have the Audio 50 "no APS" option.

There are two Audio 20 flavours, Audio 20 CC and Audio 20 CD. The first one is the older one and more compatible with Comand. If you happened to have an Audio 20 CD head unit, I'd suggest reading posts about retrofitting the NTG 2.5 Comand, the latest hard drive based unit.
