Displayed Symbol with no displayed message

I drive a 2004 E320. A symbol (see attached pic.)is displayed in my control system but there is no malfunction message in the multifunction display. The manual indicates the possible cause as follows "Certain electronic systems are unable to relay information to the control system. The following systems may have failed:"
. Coolant temperature display
. Tachometer
. Cruise control display

I have tested the above suggested failed systems and they are still functional. What do you think could be the reason for the coming up of the display symbol? Has anyone experienced this problem?

thats the check engine light, which can be one of a million things. goto autozone and they can read the code for you for free. you could also goto the dealer but they would prob charge you $120 to read the code which takes 2 mins.

The check engine display light is different from the posted symbol. See the attached pic of check engine display symbol from the manual.

In the US, the Check Engine lights says "check engine" however I think in most other cars, including most Canadian cars, it is the one pictured above, which is the generic shape of an engine. I see you are from Canada, but are you referencing a Canadian Owners Manual?

Same with other indicators in the cluster. In the US, the Brake lights says "Brake" whereas other countries I think have a (O) symbol.

That symbol is also displayed as a graphic in the center of the speedometer, which is what you have located in your manual in regards to the tachometer, cruise control, etc.. When it is displayed as an actual light, it is the Check Engine light.
