It's been raining here, and I got to test the new wiperblade just put it by the dealer this week.
The noise and chattering is still the same.

My windshield is very clean and smooth, too.
I've been searching here and concluded it's the angle of the blade sitting against the windshield which needs to be exactly 90 desgree.
I can visually see this is not the case on my car.

I see 2 options:

1. There is some kind of adjustment mechanism in the base of wiper arm to correct the angle.

2. If not, manual twist the arm to get it to the correct angle.

Has anyone tried #1 or #2 above?

I have the same problem it never works right. The dealer changed it and a month later it was bad again. They said they wouldn't cover it. POS wipers.

Mention DTB S-B-82.30/366d:

1. Inspect wiper blades / inserts for wear and replace as needed.
2. Thoroughly clean the windshield.
3. Verify use of correct washer fluid.
4. Check washer nozzle adjustment.
5. If noises persist, proceed with steps 6 and 7.
6. Check the wiper arm angle adjustment and record values per the applicable model WIS document.
7. If required, adjust wiper arm angle.

Thanks for the info.
Mine checks out up to #5.
So it's probably the angle as I mentioned earlier.
I also noticed that the tension against the winshield is stronger than other cars I had, but that's probably not adjustable.

Also, mine works fine for first 10-20 swipes.

Also I find that they're the noiseist when there's just a light "misty" rain.
When it's heavier, a lot less or no noise at all.

Yes, agree. It's soooo weird. I hate it. My dad's 02 CL500 is perfect: no noise, no streaks, just clean cut.

It is unusual to see a 2004 E320 with a setup like that. It seems that you don’t worry about it.

Hmmm I not sure about the angle of the blade. When the blade moves, that rubber doesn't stay 90deg. when it wipes the glass. It bends to a certain angle when it wipes. There are only two factors that makes the wiper noisy.

1. your wiper blade is contaminated with oil from the glass.
2. your glass is contaminated with oil from the road.

Do not apply wax to your windshield or any other product that has oil. Those wax bond to your glass like glue.

Clean your windshield (just the windshield not the whole car) with Joy dishwashing soap throughly. Do it twice or 3 times if you have too. Then put on a brand new blade.

When you detail the car, don't put anything on the wiperblade such as those so-called rubber protectant that makes your tire black.

I would advice to keep the old noisy blade for summer.

This is not true in my case.
The problem is not just little noise and squeaks, the wiper chatters with very loud sound. And it doesn't do this all the time, but the longer it's used the more frequent it happens. It could be a heat building up on the rubber blades?

I have new blades and very clean winshield I washed myself.
There has to be something different with e class wiper design or material.
So you don't have any noise with your wiper?

MBE550 - I have experience exactly the same thing as what you are having right now. Wiper is annoying as hell. The more it rains hard the more nosier it gets. I was worried that it might break my wiper motor or something. I kept searching and searching in every car forums on the web and I found some tip.

I bought my blades last summer because i notice the wiper blade is already torn and brittle. Then when rainy season came am like what the heck is wrong with the blades now I just replace this. So I clean my windshield with dishwashing soap, tried it again in the rain and still noisy as hell. A couple of weeks gone by I still keep cleaning the windshield. At first I just don't want to spend another 80+ dollars for a pair of blade because I just replaced them right?

I'm like what the hell, I'm going to the dealer and buy another pair thinking if it's still noisy then this is something else. So I drove there and bought a pair. The guy at the dealer help me install the blades. It was pouring outside, I drove out from their lot and I was smiling till I got home. I felt so peaceful without that annoying wiper sound.

Try it, you'll never know.

When I get that chatter noise I replace them and all is fine for a while. They don't last long as wiper fluid and winters especially are hard on the rubber.

Going forward I kept the previous set and may just replace the rubber portion .. this way I can swap the wipers every 4 months without paying $35 per set ..

Perhaps it is due to bad wiper angle. If so, everyone who owns one of these cars ought to have it serviced. It is a minor problem in the grand scheme of things but I agree with most here, it is annoying, and it is worse during light rain. If I really thought paying the dealer $100to $150 to replace and adjust them would solve the problem, it would be worth it. I have used rain-x successfully for highway driving. The water sheds off in such a way that I wonder if M-B actually paid attention to this during design. I guess one could make a case for rain -x as the cause of the problem. In any case, I rarely run the wipers continuously. I try not to use them at all unless the rain is severe. We had hard rain today here in Atlanta and our POS Chrysler van with probably the longest wipers on the planet, worked flawlessly.

With my previous car Lexus GS400, I never heard a noise once, and the blades last 3 yrs. Replacement blades per set, $6.
It's funny that there are times I forgot to turn off wipers after rain stopped since there was no sound.

I am seeing a large varience of prices for replacement cost.
Can someone post what the approx. part price for just replacement inserts?
Or do I need to replace the metal arm assemply that holds the rubber?

I checked again, it does look about 90 degrees.
However, because of the pressure against the windshield it is sitting slanted. I'm guessing that if the wiper is in motion it will or should change the direction so that it will be slanted away from the direction it is traveling.
If that's the case, the angle shoud not matter as long as it's close to 90 degree.

I'm going to try cleaning first.
One likely cause is the rubber compound (too hard, too sticky, etc) used for MB wiper insert.
I can definitely notice that the MB insert is a lot harder than the Lexus one.
I've seen a post where a guy changed the insert to another brand and it fixed the problem.
It can very well be the case where the combination of hard rubber and slightly off angled arm can cause the problem.
Hopefully, I'll get to the bottom of this eventually.

BTW, I love this car!!!

As a last resort, change both complete wiper arms and install new blades on them. If its not the angle, the glass or the blade, its the spring tension of the arm pressing to the glass. This will solve your problem.

My wipers didn't make noise on my '04 or on my '07. Something is not right with the arm/blade.

I had this same problem with the '01 SLK I used to have which I bought brand new. Brought it back to the dealer after I used the wipers for the first time - they saw the problem, replaced the wiper inserts. Still the same chattering. So I decided to do some research and I found these:

I got these last week and had a chance to try in the rain for an exntended time.

The chattering is completely gone.
There is a little squeak when passing thru one spot, but I think I can probably clean it. I do think there is still wax from previous car wash.
These set look like OEM and fits right in without any adapter.

So it proved that the problem was the MB's wiper inserts, at least in my case. I'm pretty sure that the PIAA slicon wiper is even better.
The only reason I didn't get it this time is that it looks after market.

I always wax the windshield with Carnuba based wax; my wipers never squeak. The wax helps keep the windshield clearer. I only use reccommended washer fluid.

I have an 05 and there are no inserts available. You have to buy the entire blade and holder assembly. My dealer wanted $45 per blade, so I went to Walmart, picked up some $4 Anco blades, pulled the rubber portion out and replaced them with the Anco inserts. The annoying chattering/squeeking went away!

However, if you plan to go this route, be patient...slipping in the new rubber blade into your e classes takes time and stong fingers.
