ESP Versus 4Matic

ESP Versus 4Matic
I presently own a 1997 E320 equipped with ASR. For the most part, this does good in moderate snowy conditions. However, on a snowy drive recently, the rear end of the car fishtailed rather severely.
I'm considering upgrading to a 2000 - 2002 E320 and am considering whether I should purchase a car with 4MATIC or will ESP do the trick? I've had very little feedback on ESP. I live in North Carolina and I don't see a lot of snow, but I want to be comfortable that my next car won't fishtail on me.
Any lessons learned with ESP or other thoughts?

A 4MATIC-equipped car will perform much better in the snow, obviously because it is all-wheel-drive. I personally would buy a 4MATIC car if I lived in, say, Minnesota. However, a rear-wheel-drive E320 with ESP and a good set of snow tires should suit your needs quite well, as you yourself said you don't see much snow in North Carolina.
