Our 07 C230 (lease over) had the same problem: if you used the auto feature to close, it would open back up. If you hold it down, it will close. I guess it's a common problem or something. Heard another guy having same issue.

I had that a couple of times with my previous cars. My SA showed me how to fix it. Basically the sunroof sensors are misaligned and need to be realigned. The fix is really easy and you can do it under 1 minute without any tools. Make sure the sunroof is closed before you start this procedure.
1) Open the sunroof but keep your finger on the open button for an additional 10 seconds after the roof is open.
2) Close the sunroof but keep your finger on the close button for an additional 10 seconds after the roof closes.
3) Tilt open the roof (push button up) but keep your finger on the button for an additional 10 seconds after the roof is open.
4) Close the roof (pull button down) but keep your finger on the button for an additional 10 seconds after the roof closes.
If done correctly your sunroof sensors have been realigned. Unfortunately there is not audio or visual queue to show the procedure has been done correctly. You can test it by opening/closing tilting/closing your sunroof.

The reset procedure didn't work for me. Cleaning and lubricating the sunroof tracks on both sides solved the problem. The safety feature which prevents the sunroof from closing against objects like your hand, etc. is sensitive and will activate if the sunroof tracks aren't clean and lubricated properly. The safety sensor interprets excess friction as a foreign object and automatically reverses the sunroof travel, causing it to reverse when you attempt the one-touch close.

Same issue
What type of lubricant did you use ?

Well you can either get a half ounce which should last you a long time for $10, I got mine a while ago and did both cars and there's still a lot left or you can get the 500 gram one which should last several decades.

the procedure mention here only learns the stops not the pinch protection. the reason its doing that is because there is more force required to close the roof compare to when the tracks were new and clean.

I use a super thin coating of Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease on the tracks (available at most car parts stores)

Did you know that there is a ovehead control module (OCP) that will store a fautl code if there is a problem with the sunroof? In there you can also view live data from the sunroof. Just found this out and thought I would share as I have been tracking down a sunroof issue for months.

2008 E350 (W211 @170K), 2012 ML350 (W166 @119K), 2014 E350 Sport (W212 @96K), 2015 ML350 (W166 @92K)
and you can reset the code by removing Fuse 9 in the trunk fuse box for say 5 min. Put it back in, and try to use the sunroof again, if the failure repeats (like jumping when activated), it will trigger the code again.
what is your current issue with the sunroof?
